How does this work?
My TV is a Sony Bravia and has something called Bravia Sync on it.
When I switch my Blu Ray player on it detects and switches itself over to the HDMI channel for my Blu Ray player. How does this work and will it work with all HDMI inputs? As I cant get it to see my Sky HD box Cheers |

Bravia Sync is Sony's implementation of HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronic Control). It can work across different brands if the devices are enabled. Sky boxes though, do not have this feature.
spiney2 - if you read the article in the link you posted it says Sonys will work with Panasonics! |

It uses the HDMI CEC link. This is a serial data link built into the HDMI spec that allows devices to communicate with each other in various ways.
Different manufacturers call it different things and may well not be 100% compatible with each other. But Phillips do support it's use, they call it EasyLink. The two systems may not allow full and total control however but may just support a small set of common functions, such as auto switching to HDMI. I rather suspect the Sky box does not support CEC. |

Best I could find:
"None of these systems claim that they will work with other manufacturers’ enabled components. Separate audio and video components that promise to work with other brands were released in the latter part of 2007. Some come with the HDMI CEC enabled, while others will need an update in the future. Denon receivers, Pioneer KURO TVs, Toshiba HD DVD players, and Samsung HTIB systems claim to be cross-brand compatible, but I couldn’t verify this. Perhaps universal compatibility will drive the common naming of functions." http://www.hometheatermag.com/hookmeup/208hook/ |

My slim PS3 auto switches, via HDMI, on my Toshiba Regza TV. I'm guessing it's a similar system to Sonys' one.

My Panasonic tv auto switches to one of the 3 HDMI inputs when I switch on the V+ , my PS3 or my Bluray player.
The PS3 Slim has HDMI Control as a feature but the earlier bulky ones don't and neither do the Sky HD or V+ boxes so for any of those your tv needs to read any HDMI input. Panasonic tv's will auto switch for any HDMI input but only on input 1 . Both the other inputs will only auto switch with devices that use HDMI Control . So I would try input 1 if you use V+ or Sky HD and use the other inputs for other devices . Devices that do use HDMI Control usually need it activated in their setup menu before they work. My son has a Samsung LCD and his PS3 Slim does not auto switch at all , so it's also down to whether the tv supports the feature |

To try and avoid confusion, you need:
1) A TV that supports CEC, which may have various different names. 2) A source that supports CEC, again could have different names. 3) Makes sure it's switched ON in the menus, on TV's you can generally disable it - as some non-CEC sources can upset things. The easiest way is to stick to Sony/Panasonic, which as well as been the best makes actually developed CEC. But you're still stuffed for Sky and Freesat boxes. |
