Even better if you can match relevant titles up with a dance.
I'll kick off with Lady Gaga's Just Dance for Ann and Anton's tango

I tweeted these:
Eurythmics "Little Bird" and Visage "Fade to Grey" for a Tango. Blondie "Call Me" and Eric Clapton "Bad Love" for a Paso. ABBA "Mama Mia" for a Quickstep The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset" for a VW (with heyjude's help that one!) |

I've got an idea.
It's a radical one, but bear with me. How about... playing the music that the dance is designed to work with? I know, crazy idea. It'll never work. |

I'd like to see a bit of classical on the show. Or at least, traditional music where it's possible - I mean, a tango or paso doble is never as stirring to me as when it's performed with its traditional music.
I'm probably a real oddity on this, but I'd be happy enough if the singers were ditched and they all danced to just the live music, no lyrics. I find the singing a little dire at times, must admit. |

I don't suppose 'Sweet Mistry' by Wet Wet Wet suits any of the dances.....

How about all the people complaining about the type of music being used get off their incredibly high horses and just mute their tellies instead?
![]() There are literally tens of thousands of Argentine Tango tracks, for example - so what do they choose to showcase the best AT couple? "When Doves Cry" by Prince. For chrissakes... Dance is tied in to the music - that's almost a definition of what a dance style is, it's a particular way of moving to a specific genre of music. |

Apart from the whole obvious 'entertainment vs actual dance show' rant, is using popular music, like costuming, not simply another way of ensuring that each routine is given a touch of individuality in people's minds?
I mean, I remember very little about some of the dances Matt di Angelo did, but I do remember that the music choices were incredibly bold. A selection with a bit of cleverness like 'Layla' for Laila's paso last year can also add interest. Hmmm...'Knock on Wood' would've been rather good for Gavin or Scott if Gethin and Camilla hadn't used it already

This programme always takes over my flippin' life!
Is it wrong that in the car last night I had my iPod on shuffle and was going "ooh, that would be a good Paso, oooh that would be a good Tango" to myself??? |

The prime example this year is the unbelievably strange choice of tracks to dance salsa to. I mean, good grief, "Let's hear it for the boy"? Not a single salsa track amongst them. |

The problem is that most Western Pop music is not well-suited for most of the dances being performed on the show, even in its new dumbed-down and propped-up format.
The prime example this year is the unbelievably strange choice of tracks to dance salsa to. I mean, good grief, "Let's hear it for the boy"? Not a single salsa track amongst them. Presumably the right beat means you can perform the steps at the right speed, which I imagine is the main prerequisite for a dance track. Given this, what is it that makes music 'waltz music', 'samba music' etc, apart from the right sort of tempo? If it's just the melodies, the instruments used etc., then I maintain that you're simply speaking from personal preference, not in defence of some sort of trangressed dance law. I am inclined to agree with you about the salsa choices, however. I think that's because salsa is the sort of bastard dance of SCD - nobody really knows how to do it and consequently all sorts of random steps (and tunes) get chucked in there. |
