Not a single salsa track amongst them.”
I find for most of the choices, the fundamental beat of the song is about right. If you were to count 'one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight' at quickstep tempo, for example, I could sing you both Jet and The Bare Necessities and have them happily fit with that beat.
Presumably the right beat means you can perform the steps at the right speed, which I imagine is the main prerequisite for a dance track.
Given this, what is it that makes music 'waltz music', 'samba music' etc, apart from the right sort of tempo? If it's just the melodies, the instruments used etc., then I maintain that you're simply speaking from personal preference, not in defence of some sort of trangressed dance law.
I am inclined to agree with you about the salsa choices, however. I think that's because salsa is the sort of bastard dance of SCD - nobody really knows how to do it and consequently all sorts of random steps (and tunes) get chucked in there.
