I think they should all get the chance to do it.
The Charelston is really fun and highly anticipated which is good but it can make the other dance look boring in comparison. Last year the Rock'n'Rolls altogether looked pretty feeble next to the Charleston, not even taking into account the technique or who performed it. Ability is a minor factor compared to entertainment when it comes to the dance if you want to get votes. The dance of the Charelston its self was more exciting in my opinion.
Considering that the rock'n'roll and charelston were new dances and the tango is something we've all seen before then the effect might be that the tangos will look even duller next to the other dance. So perhaps the tango dancers may suffer with the votes this week.

So maybe it's too late now but seeing how well the dances were recieved last year, every couple left standing should have been given the chance to Charelston if you ask me. Perhaps that would have worked better in the later stages because then you'd have over 10 Charlestons in a row but then again I wouldn't have thought they'd re-introduce it so early.

Please no. The only reason I will be able to watch on Saturday is that at least there will be the tangos to watch.

I loathe the Charleston. Stupid dance!

Those who are doing the tango this weekend will get the chance to do Charleston later on in the series when they start having more of a mix of dances. Afterall all the couples still haven't done the opposite dance to what they did from waltz/cha-cha-cha, salsa/foxtrot and quickstep/rumba.
I don't think there has ever been a time in strictly history where all the couples have done the same dance in one evening.
Yes last year Ricky got to the final without doing Charleston and Chris without doing rock 'n' roll but I assume it was because they introduced too many new dances having charleston up against rock 'n' roll. This year I counted out and was pretty sure I could make it all fir so that the finalists had done all the dances.

They used to have Samba Week, where all the couples would perform just a Samba, but that was only in the first two series.

I think Charleston's a bit of a double edged sword this series. Coming after Chris & Ola's effort last year, which was the public's favourite dance of last series, I would imagine the comparisons are going to be onerous. It's a bit like doing an Argentine Tango the year after Mark's effort.

That, oddly, is why I'm looking forward to it - as all last year's efforts were pretty good, it'll be interesting to see what a crappy Charleston looks like, mentioning no names, Peter Shilton.

I agree. I can barely stand to watch most of them, they are so nauseating.

Chris and Ola's Charleston was incredibly irritating and is easily my worst memory of all the years of SCD. Words struggle to express how much I dislike it. It was barely even a dance at all, rather than ham acting, gurning, plus weak acrobatics that wouldn't even seem worth doing if they weren't in a "dance".


What is the reason for thinking the Cola Charleston was the public's favourite? Was there a poll or something?

Not based on anything other than my own perception. I just think it was. (I wasn't a fan either, maybe it's me being fatalistic regarding my taste and the public's)

Although the Charleston turned out to be popular last year, I got the impression that it was hurriedly added to the dance list as they were running out of dances.
I know I felt it relieved a lot of tension after the trauma with Jade's injury etc.
Having it danced with the Tango provides just about the greatest diversity you could have in dancing styles and I would reckon will please just about everybody whatever their taste.

Personally, my fav Ballrooms are Tango and Foxtrot, non-Ballroom are Charleston and Jive.

I'm sure that as the series progresses into the weeks with a variety of dances, more couples will be dancing it.

My question really as with all the dances, is how they decide who dances what?
Perhaps they (PTB) wanted to show some of the couples having a 'fun' side (*groan*) to them which they felt hadn't been apparent yet as this seems to be the predominant theme this year

Both Charleston and Tango have the potential to have a great impact on the judges and viewers, although perhaps for different reasons. If the Charleston dancers were up against something more understated like the Waltz, I'd be more worried about the fortunes of those dancing in the Waltz group.

Yes - that's how I see it, both are high-impact dances.

And there were only 5/6 couples left by Samba week.

I get what the OP means and I think this could be a voting weekend where the public leader board is quite different from the judges' leader board.

From what I saw from the training footage on ITT, the Charleston couples didn't seem to be working on their foot work and that's what the judges picked Chris and Ola up on last year. The public however, might just vote based on the entertainment value.

I loved the Charleston last year and I'm looking forward to it tomorrow night, but I don't think it should be up against an established dance like the Tango, where even a non-dancer like me now has an idea of what to watch for during the dance. The Charleston should be danced alongside another new dance like last year - except everyone should dance both if they stay in the competition.

Personally I think the Salsa or the AT should be dropped and replaced by another 'swing' style dance like the Lindy Hop and that's what should be danced along side the Charleston.

hmm, the more i think about it the more i am liking the charleston. last year all of them were good so i want to know what a bad and a just ok one will be like , and personally chris's charleston last year was more character than technique so i think it would be good to see another one like ali's.

i think tomorrow will be a good day but i dont think that the rock n roll was given enough credit last year i think because natalie wasn't very good and ricky's was just ok no one really cared for it.

I think it was too similar to the Jive or at least the hybrid version that we social dancers attempt.
Two new dances in the one week is not a good idea - break us in gently and with more couples so we can compare.

I think tomorrow night's show will be very entertaining what ever happens!

I actually think that pairing the Charleston with the Tango is perfect - the Tango is such a strong dance in its own right and a favourite of many that I don't think anyone doing it would automatically be at a disadvantage.
