Hey,

Just seen this, Charlotte Church has sung her new single "We Were Young" on ITV Wales. I think it's great. Check it out:

What do you think?

Eeeeek! Is this the girl who used to have to voice of an angel? She sounds terrible to my ears.
Listen to "Back to scratch"; its actually worse.

I used to like Charlotte when she sang in that operatic style.

I've not watched the performance but just wanted to say how unbelievably stupid her album title is.

It's a mix of Back To Black, 'start from scratch' and 'back to basics' .... and makes no sense... Back To Scratch....? WTF?

Who came up with that in their sleep?

Back to scratch is a genuine saying, it means back to the way things were. For example if someone had been ill and they were getting better you would say "so glad your getting back to scratch".

I'm not convinced. Google has NOTHING to back it up as a saying.

It just seems like confusion between many phrases, another being 'up to scratch'.

Whether or not Google has anything on it is irrelevant. Since when has Google been the masters of colloquial English. I doubt google says "Aup me duck" is a proper saying either doesn't mean it isn't used by thousands. I know 'back to scratch' is a legitimate saying because I've used all of my life. If people say it it's a saying, no matter what a internet search functions says

Seriously... if it is a saying with common enough use for it to be chosen as an album title... there would be plenty examples of it being used in that context on the internet.... I can find none.

And btw, plenty of examples of "Aup me duck"

Believe what you want to believe. It's cleary well known enough to be used as her album title. As I said it means back to the way things were or back to the start, hence why she's used it as her title.

It isn't 'clearly well known enough to be used as her album title' at all.

Whether it's a saying among you and people you know or not... the evidence suggests it is more likely the album title was created by a hodge-podge / confusion of phrases because all we have to go on otherwise is one person - you... the 'phrase' is at least blatantly uncommon .... a google search is not irrelevant... it's a perfect measure.... especially when it comes up with nothing.

IMO anyone who uses it as a phrase / thinks they've heard it before has just done the same thing somewhere down the line / right now and mixed up a number of other phrases.

I have heard the saying 'back to scratch' many times before too.

Can't believe how 'decent' this song sounds.

Back to scratch seriously as her voice isn't suited to that type of music and the gravitas it gives ruins any rock chick image. The video is terrible too.

An album title doesn't have to be a well known phrase? I think it's quite nice actually. It's similar to 'Back To Basics' but sounds more authentic, like there is more use of instrument and better use of vocals.

Yes but never mind the title. The singing is not good. Charlotte is a lovely girl but she has a voice suited to Classical singing. She is no good at singing pop/disco/rap/rock etc.
Go back to Pie Jesu Charlotte (voice of an angel).
