I personally think TOTP would be a lot better if all the artists were made to perform live. It's a cop out when they turn up and mime and that doesn't just go for TOTP. Take S Club 7 at last night's Record Of The Year. They won overall yet they were obviously miming.

I know its a total joke.

I know CD:UK also does have the odd mimer on but the majority of artists do actually sing live. Sophie Ellis Bextor, Sterephonics, Atomic Shitten, Travis blah blah........ all sing live on here. Sometimes though they mime on TOTP, very strange!

Back in the early nineties, TOTP re-launched and made a commitment to having acts actually sing live..... But it didn't last long as some of the most popular acts that couldn't sing, would not appear on TOTP and they had to start allowing them to mime again, as they were running out of acts to fill the show.

I heard that too Madman and it makes me laugh. They can obviously sing because they have put records out, but it seems too much to ask for them to play live for their fans. It's just a good job that TOTP don't charge an entry fee (I believe!)otherwise I for one would not go just to see artists mime.

The BBC should bring this programme back as the current music channels fail to deliver and are riddled with adverts. Watching the re-runs of 1976 TOTP on BBC4 on Thurdays, it's good to see again, can't wait till new year when 1977 editions arrive when the music just got better.

Hilarious when Oasis showed up and were told they had to mime... they switched round so Noel was the frontman and Liam was on guitar.

Agreed.

One of the excuses given is that there are specific music stations-well there was once.

Most of the time its reality crap.

Is this the earliest known use of LOL? I am sure texting wasnt much in use at this time, so who knows

Back on track, I wondered what tf the op was on about till I saw the date But is SHOULD come back. I dont have time to scour the music channels or youtube and like to see the acts that are in the charts (even if I dont always like it), and TOTP was perfect for that.

The only reason this show failed was the scheduling. If they put it on between the Corrie eps on Friday or the Dale ones on Thursday it would rake in the viewers. Easternders could move to Weds.

not sure if it would work... there are better ways of viewing music. totp was always a joke mime fest, but at least in the past there was decent material to play, unlike today.

.
lol started being regularly used in web communication since the mid 90's.

On March 24, 2011, LOL, along with other initialisms, has been formally recognized in an update of the Oxford English Dictionary.[13][27] In their research, it was determined that the earliest recorded use of LOL as an initialism was for "little old lady" in the 1960s.[28] They also discovered that the oldest written record of the use of LOL in the contemporary meaning of "Laughing Out Loud" was from a message typed by Wayne Pearson in the 1980s, from the archives of Usenet.[29]

I thought YouTube and digital downloads killed TOTP?
