I have just come back from one of my relatives homes setting up their Broadband.

I even took a long cat5 cable so they could try iPlayer on their HDR that they have had since last year (standard install with twin feeds).

Anyway I pressed the Red button on BBC1 and it said to goto page 7001 for information of iPlayer coming to Freesat HD.

I then twigged it must be on old firmware which it was .02

Tried auto update with no luck and did not have a USB stick so no iPlayer.

So why had it never upgraded itself? are other HDR boxes still on a old version?

I assume update now did not work as the primitive update system only permits one product firmware to be online at a time.

The very first hdrs came with a loader that had a bug in that you could not update with only a single cable. These boxes will be stuck with the original firmware. Later on simultaneous transmission of HD and HDR firmware required an another update. Both the loader and firmware are easily updateble using most usb pen drives.

You need to update before the new ota one promised shortly arrives

I will update it via USB as you suggest but how many more boxes are still in service stuck with firmware that leaves empty folders when programs are deleted?

My box still has version U7.51 and to be perfectly honest with you I don't understand the update process.
The download instructions tell me to change the file name, how do I do that? Also it tells me that a USB memory stick of less than 1gb is recommended, mine is 8gb.

I really don't understand this at all,and as my machine works perfectly I am in two minds wether to bother at all.
I don't want to end up in a situation where my box is unusable because I have done something wrong,so is this a case of,"if it ain't broke don't fix it",or will my machine simply stop working if I don't keep it up to date.

To rename the file just right click the file in windows explorer and choose rename. Type in the filename (if you cant see the extension .hdf ignore it when renaming, its already there you just can't see it.).

A 8GB stick works fine with my hdr, if you stick it in the front port does the hdr come up with a message that a usb device has been connected ?

If you have two cables the loader is not that important but the firmware is. What version of firmware does diagnostics say you have ?

you have the latest firmware so no need to worry . New OTA due shortly will correct the faulure of the hdr to continue recording after a power cut and allow you to record a programme you start watching live from the beginning using the timeshift buffer contents

Thank you Graham, you are a genius.
Followed you advice and I now have loader version U7.53.
I am now worried I might be turning into a bit of a nerd,(or maybe not),

No genius i am afraid , just an early adopter my hdr dates from Nov 2008 and is one that came with the original 01 firmware.

In any case thanks for the thanks , there are lots of contributors to this forum that would have given the same advice.

Next step is to transfer a SD recording to your PC and watch it from there. It's not hard honest

If you want to fix the non-display of file extensions in Windows Explorer, go to Tools - Folder Options, and on the View tab, untick the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types".

This box is ticked by default because Microsoft treats us all like 4-year-olds who wouldn't understand what a file extension is. It's something that really annoys me

Me to. I also deselect - display friendly error message which tell you nothing in IE.

Easy to tell if your box has the old firmware and needs the manual update using the following clues....

1. In Media when you delete all programs from a series it leaves the empty folder behind with zero files in it.
2. If you try and delete a file while recording you get a message saying "No delete while recording".

If you have those two issues your box is not updating correctly.

Difficult to type this as a floating screwfix advert is over the text.

Yah, me too. It caused no end of problems when I was trying to help my Dad over the phone. It's bad enough trying to decipher his descriptions of things(*) without having Windows hiding stuff.

These days we use LogmeIn which has made life a lot easier.

(*)Like the time I asked him to right click an icon in the status bar.
Him:"Nothing happened"
Me:"Nothing?"
Him:"Well a white box appeared but it's gone now"
Me:"What kind of white box?"
Him:"Rectangular with writing in it"
Me:<engage mute><swear profusely>.

The thing is he's capable of installing Windows and adding memory and new hard disks so he's not thick or incompetent. He just isn't very good at recognising or describing things. I think he's learnt how to use the computer by rote rather than actually reading what's on the screen.

Bless 'im

That's right, it's Page 7001, not channel 7001

Don't worry about the loader the latest one only sorts out a few problems if you are using multiple satellites. It's only a problem if you have the very first loader .50.

Your box must have updated OK to V13 so it will update OK when the next one arrives.

No date yet for the OTA, looks now as if it will be November.

I don't think they broadcast loader updates (It's not on the current schedule anyway).

As Graham says loader 7.52 will be fine for you - but did you read and follow (exactly) the download instructions?

Does you box see the USB key when it is inserted in normal operation?

They can't do OTA's for loader updates a reception glitch could brick your box

Needing to update the loader usually means they cheated by adding functionality that should have been in the post-loader or firmware itself in the first place.

7.52 fixed a bug that prevented OTA firmware upgrades when only using a single cable

7.53 resolved issues associated with setting up diseqc switches
