Or you could just check on Amazon when buying the book.

In the info where it tells you publisher, ISBN, etc it also tells you how many pages are in the book.

Do we?

Books have varying sizes of print, different fonts and possibly pictures.

Hardback books tend to have larger pages with more text on them. Some books like a Bible or Dictionary combine small text with a column layout that really packs words in!

A "page" is a pretty vague concept and that's why it was difficult for Amazon to link Kindle Books to physical pages in a paperback/hardback book.

The "location" system is not very user friendly though. It's based on a fixed amount of data used to represent the text in a book.

That gives roughly 120 characters per location.

Now that the Kindle 3.1 software and the Apps for the various platforms support "proper" page numbers, this is less of an issue.

I've tried a few new authors of short stories... Offbeat & Sanctuary by David Heaton and Trick of the Light by Patricia M Lenehan and enjoyed them.

Not really — it was a genuine question! Thanks to all those who responded. I don't think I read enough to justify the investment, but I can now see why it might have benefits for an avid reader.

Free newspapers. I used to buy The Guardian every day. Now I read it for free on my Kindle.

Hi everyone
I'm thinking of investing in a Kindle as I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in hospital and it can be a pain carting around loads of books with me. I'm unsure whether to get a standard one or a 3G one, any advice would be helpful as I have no clue when it comes to technology. Thanks

Get the 3G version so you don't have to endure the vagaries of wi-fi. Mcdonald's wi-fi cattled my Kindle so badly I had to call tech support.

If you travel alot, I'd recommend the 3G.

I can't recommend a kindle enough, I use mine everyday and also travel quite a bit and it's a godsend.

I bought mine from PC World, same price, and no waiting.

I then called at Tesco's on the way home to do some shopping, and found a big pile of them there as well (again, same price).

I was going to get one in Tesco just before I went into hospital, but I was on Amazon yesterday and I bought one on impulse. It's getting delivered today and I still have 1 hardback and 2 paperbakcs left on my 'to read' shelf so I don't mind a little wait

I was thinking of getting the lighted cover for my Kindle from Amazon. It's a hefty price but I really want a non-battery powered light to read in the dark. Anyone have one of these? Is the build quality good?

Ah, well I sincerely apologise then, it is just that is very question that you find a lot of people say on Kindle thread - in attempt to troll, as it were.

But if you are genuine I am sorry. Well the lists people responded with are all very true.

I have to say as well if you are not an avid reader you may become with a kindle, I was not an avid reader, I liked to read but since getting the kindle I have been reading a book a week / 2 weeks.

The quality is excellent - leather exterior, suede-like interior, well stitched, and the clips hold the Kindle very securely plus provide the power for the light.

Do you think there will be a summer offer on Kindle books? They've had a Christmas and Spring deal so far...

They always have offers on. In the past month, I have bought five books all of which have been reduced in price.

If you look daily, you can see which ones are reduced.

Ah thanks stud u like. I should look at Amazon more often! I will take a peek now I'm currently reading my way through the books I bought from the Spring deal (I bought about 15).

I think penguin have reduced the prices on a lot of their kindle books recently. I bought the help last week for £3.99 reduced from £6.99 previously.

I love my kindle already! Just got to buy a light for it now and maybe a splash cover. I love it, well worth the price! I go on Amazon everyday to add books to my wishlist

My 78 yr old mother has had a protracted stay in hospital, in the midst of which she had her birthday. We had clubbed together and bought her a Kindle. She was too poorly to want to keep it in hospital with her at first.

As it is linked to my Amazon account, she is able to share the books I have bought, as well as others she has paid for.

She was re-admitted this week, after a week at home using her Kindle. I set it all up for her, and after going twice through how to use the five way button, she's got used to it already.

She's addicted. And she certainly wasn't leaving it at home for this hospital stay!

Last night I didn't leave the ward until 20 mins after visiting time had ended because I was writing down where to buy them, which one to get for those with/without internet connections, and how easy it is to use. That was for both nurses and patients! Doctors have apparently been very interested too.

I think I need to be on commission with Amazon

If my Ubisurfer finally packs up - I've met most of the staff at their Acton depot after various problems - I'll probably get one for the free - if restricted - web browser. Though who knows how long it will stay free .....

My lighted cover just came today. It looks really solid. Nice leather smell too. Clips were a bit hard to get in but they're secured well.

I have two questions for those who have had the cover for a while;

1) I've seen a lot of videos/pictures of readers inverting the left side of the cover and reading normally. I tried this and, after I turned it back again, I noticed some foldings down the spine. Is this "healthy" for the cover?

2) When the Kindle is on, but the light pushed down, does it still take power from the Kindle? In theory it wouldn't but I'm wondering if the light is activated anyway.

Thanks.

I wondered who the other person was who bought a Ubisurfer.
What a piece of crap that turned out to be.

Yes, the light is so handy! I love the feel of the cover, substantial. Quite expensive but I'm so glad I bought it. Hope this helps.

Oops just read further and see that you have since bought one.
