Make sure you tick the "It's a Gift" box (or whatever it's called) and just purchase on your own account - this means it won't be pre-registered to you account or hers - but she can simply login. Thats what I did with mine at xmas.

You can also always buy it from shops like Tesco and Argos

OK will think about where to buy it from. Just thought Amazon was the best place to get it but I would be buying the power plug from Amazon as its a few pounds cheaper from Amazon than Argos. If I buy from Amazon I will tick the as a gift box.

Don't they come with plug-in chargers now? Ours did (keyboard model)

My wife's non-keyboard one didn't come with a charger - just a USB cable.

Cost cutting obviously. Mind you I suppose most people with a smartphone will have a plug-in USB - micro USB charger.

My wife has never needed a charger as she just plugs it into her PC once a week or so to charge up…although still would have been nice for one to have been included although I suppose it makes it cheaper to buy.

Plug in chargers have the advantage of being a lot faster (maybe 3 times) than USB to PC if that is an issue.

I wonder how many people have purchased a Kindle from reading this thread.

I know I did.

There are rumours a new is coming out in July with a built in light for reading in the dark or low light conditions, and won't be hardly any dearer.

Wouldn't make me upgrade TBH, I will hold out for colour E-Ink so I can use it with PDFs better.

The light will surelly shorten battery life significantly, I rather use an external light, not depending on Kindle battery.

If anything like the Nook it cuts the battery in half.

Im thinking of ordering the Amazon Kindle touch at £1.09 for my sisters birthday when I get payed end of week and then in July or August getting the power plug and the leather case for it. As her birthday not till first week of September and I dont want to spend over £200 all at once. Is it worth also getting this when I order the Kindle Touch.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...=AFDFHJR2PBU2N or should I just order without the 3-Year SquareTrade Warranty and just get it with the power plug and get the case in July or August
This is the case im thinking of getting in July or August.

My experiences with the Kindle are following. Use them as something to consider not as something you have to do

I do not have the warranty, in my experience if something does not break the first year then it will pretty likely last a long time.

As for the charger, you can use a standard USB charger, so if your sister already got one, e.g., with a smartphone, you can save money on it towards the warranty or the case. You can use an USB port of a computer to charge it, but it takes much longer, I'd recommend to get a standalone USB charger.

And the case, it's a good thing to get the original one, but it will cost you the arm and the leg for a bit of leather and a LED light. There are cheaper alternatives if you are on a tight budget. I have an original leather case for Kindle Keyboard without light that is probably not available anymore as there was a technical issue with them. Anyway, I use the case only for transportation and read without the case. Which means it's lighter and more comfortable to hold in hand. So you may consider that, too and get something cheaper that will protect the Kindle when in a bag, but won't be used otherwise. But the case you want should be OK, too. It's not such a huge difference in weight after all, in absolute figures. But it almost doubles the weight.

I don't think the touch really offers any great advantages over the non-touch version unless your sister is going to be annotating her books (and then the Kindle Keyboard would be a better choice).

Don't bother with the extended warranty, they're usually a waste of money and if your sister buys a lot of ebooks from Amazon they'll probably replace her Kindle for free if anything happens to it outside of warranty.

Similarly, the "official" Kindle charger is really over-priced. A Micro-USB cable comes with the Kindle so any generic USB charger will work. Something like this might be an idea if your sister travels outside the UK (or this if she doesn't), and it's a fraction of the price of the official one.

I went with a nice Hemp cover for my Kindle (Keyboard) because i didn't fancy wrapping it in animal skin and didn't need a light. There are similar cases for the touch and non-touch versions that are substantially cheaper than the leather one, but they don't contain lights.

Personally, for me, they are chalk and cheese. I had an original Kindle for years but nearly always used my iPad in preference for reading Kindle books. Then I got a Touch and now it is my preferred reading device.

I don't like the idea of fingerprints on the reader's screen. I used to have a touchscreen Sony PRS600 reader, but it had used a stylus, so it wasn't an issue, but I am not sure about the new Kindles, maybe somebody who owns one can post if it is a problem. An alternative is Kindle Keyboard 3G (wifi only seems to be discontinued), which costs 40 quid more or there's the cheapest one for £89.00, but there you have to use 5-way controller instead of touch or physical keyboard. Not an issue if you want to buy books mostly from a computer. But I would say the touch wifi only is a safe middle of the road even if you have to clean the screen more often.

My biggest problem with the non-Touch version was constantly catching the page turn buttons by mistake when I pick the thing up. Doesn't happen with the Touch. Also just so much more intuitive to use touch.

One last thing before I think of ordering it. If I dont get the kindle power adaptor. Will the usb lead that comes with it fit my sisters IPhone 3gs plug. So it can still be charged via the mains.
Also after reading some online reviews im wondering if its worth paying the extra and getting the 3g verson of the touch. My sister dose go on holiday to Europe at lest once a year for maybe a short break and I sometimes go with her.

Is it this power adapter?

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB706

It either has to have an USB receptacle like the one in that picture where you can plug in the cable that comes with the Kindle, or it must have a micro-USB connector that can be plugged directly into the Kindle. If it only has that funny Apple connector that goes directly into iPhone it won't work.

As for 3G, it's a convenience, a nice to have. But they changed the policy how it can be used. With the old 3G keyboard you can use 3G for web browsing at home and abroad for free, which is nice if you want to check your emails, or news headlines and such. With 3G touch you can only browse wikipedia and google, regardless if at home or abroad, 3G is then used almost exclusively for books purchasing and book delivery. It's up to you to decide if it makes sense to have 3G with touch, keyboard or not at all. I have 3G keyboard and I use 3G for books regularly, in abroad, too. I also used 3G for web browsing abroad. I do not abuse it, but it's nice to get online with it if you can't find free wi-fi. The web browser is rather basic and slow, but if the alternative is nothing, it's OK. Up to you. It's a question of comfort. Even the cheapest 5-way-controller model is great for the core functionality - reading, the display is the same for all models. 3G keyboard is an old model now, though.
