There's one sitting in my bedroom on the floor, gathering dust.

It was a good phone when released, but it's designed very badly and faults soon appeared. Also, having used handsets with more modern feeling UIs on their OS the UI on Symbian, running on the N97, feels very dated and slow.

I would avoid really...

It's got a faulty touch screen from the design fault where it has indented slightly - can't see it, but when powered on the screen isn't very responsive unfortunately.

Which company did you use by the way?

Yet it still manages to have richer functionality than any iPhone ..... but its generally acknowledged, even by Nokia, that the N97 was a mistake - late, hardware issues, software not ready on release, etc.

The newer S^3 phones are leagues ahead in daily operation and overall performance.

Correct.

I would agree totally. It's a shame, had it been released 6 to 12 months earlier it would have probably been a success, of course they'd have had to design it properly too.

Sadly Symbian just doesn't have the UI to match competition from iOS and Android. It feels very dated and unpolished. There's no wonder it's starting to see a slump in sales and companies are stopping using it - Samsung and SonyEriccson.
