I love Matt and think and hope he will will this year's X Factor but I was disappointed to hear him pass his version of "Baby One More Time" as his own version.

Even the judges were fawning over him and the way he made a popular song his own.

Well, I heard almost the exact acoustic version sung by Travis some years ago.

The OP is obviously new hear. This is yesterday's news.

I still prefer Matt's version of a cheesy song.

Oh, so it puts people's backs up when it's not Cher in the minefield.

I've been asking this and no takers so far. Are there any properly musical people who can talk us through the two versions because to my ears (just as a listener to music) there are clear differences in the pacing, intent and emotional range of the two versions, though they clearly have a lot in common.

Would be really glad of any thoughts from you musical people on this subject, thanks -- saves us from wallowing around in conjecture and prejudice

I agree. I was still nervious listening to Matt on Sat, wondering how he would deal with the really cheesy bits. For me he dealt with them differently than the one in the OP's link, which I also liked but Matt's version seemed to me even further away from the origonal

It's not because both versions are acoustic that they are identical, although of course by nature, they will be closer to each other than to the original.
There are clear differences to my ears as well.

The "original" versions never are on X factor. They plagiarise others - quite often Idol contestants such as David Cook (who also did a slightly different version of this version!) and Adam Lamberts' "Mad World" that Aiden did the other week.

All of Cher's so called originals are by someone else as well.

We can't blame the contestants for it though - the producers seem to think we are all accepting of whatever they tell us, but we know when an original is an original and when its not!

On Idol they are allowed to do their own arrangements if they are capable of doing so - on X Factor it seems that they are not.

Oh, are you comparing this to Cher saying she wrote the lyrics? They're not the same case at all. One is a direct untruth, the other is at most (at best, cos Travis's song is a great version) a musical influence. Legally, they'd be very different instances

NB I'm not wanting to open up another round of Cher bitterness here, just trying to keep the thing on track

Err, no he didn't, he's never sung it to the best of my knowledge and definatley didn't sing it on Idol

It was just called an original version which he chose to do, he didn't claim it as his own arrangement, and I think he did it brilliantly, but it wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea.

There is no comparison.

Matt version was the same of a past artist but he didn't claim that it was completely his own set up - which Cher, or you can say the producers did, with her performance.

I have no problem with Cher doing same interpretations as previously seen but it does annoy me when its passed of as some genius idea that she came up with it. Though I accept that's an x-factor problem, not a Cher one.

At least it wasn't Darius's version

I never heard him try and pass it off as his own - anyway it was brilliant irrespective of originality.

The only TV reality self arranged, original version of this song is Darius's.

He was a) told to sing this song because he'd already sung a great straight version of it at his original audition and b) told to use his full voice range because he'd just sung a bass baritone original song and the judges wanted him to sing a pop cover again.

He had ten minutes and tried to do something different with the vocals and throw in some of the choreography rubbish they'd been forced to do on Popstars. It just looked silly for a soloist, especially someone so tall and so distinctive looking..

I agree with everything (except that Cook didn't perform this song).
May be Matt would love to be able to do his own arrangements , and who knows, may be he had some input in this one, but usually the X Factor contestants haven't got this opportunity
I do think that Matt's version was different to Travis' one, but even if it was not, anything original on the show is created by others, so it wouldn't make much difference.
The contestants are praised all the time for things they have no control over
But irrespective of originality, Matt's performance was brilliant, and that's what's important

I've just run the two (Matt andTravis) together and played spot the difference.
Same key
same tempo
Same version, really.

Matt sang it well, but ultimately, it was just karaoke.

No one on the show said Matt came up with this version. They did however imply several times both during the VT, after the performance and then on Xtra Factor that Cher was the one who invented the Annie/Rap when it was already a well known song.

That is the key difference. No point in Cher fans trying to take the heat off her by wanting focus to move onto Matt because it won't happen.

I'd say Matts version is slightly pacier and the vocal has more emotion and depth. They're both acoustic versions of the song of course but to me Matt's is just...better. Thinking about it I'd use actual spending money to buy Matt's version but not the Travis one. Which shows to me personally how essentially different they are.

This thread is supposed to be about whether or not Matt's version of the song was 'origanal' What's that got to do with Cher?

I did wonder if this was an original version. I was sure that I'd heard it somewhere else.

Loved it all the same.

It's blatent that the OP, Who just so happens to be a new user, only posted this thread in response to the Cher outrage last week. Come on..
