Strong officials for Neighbours' 6,000th Episode.

Lunchtime 0.97m
Teatime 1.53m
Total 2.5m

Home & Away didn't benefit from Neighbours' boost though. For I think the first time ever, all five episodes of H&A rated below 1.0m per single showing. In addition FIVER's first run episodes are down 18% year-on-year, from an average of 610k in '09 to 499k this year. Not as dramatic a decline as we've seen with Hollyoaks but a bit worrying.

It seems the summer hiatus was ill-advised.

They don't have much option now they are airing so close to Aus transmission. Seven in Australia takes several weeks off from Dec-Jan. C5 spreads these out across the year with 5 weeks off in the summer and a further 2-3 weeks at Christmas.

Better to take most of it at a time of year when teatime viewing is likely to be low.

Weren't they close to overtaking Australia earlier this year IIRC?

Maybe having it four days a week could be an option with that in mind. Do you think that would ever be considered?

I think the gap was reduced to 1-2 weeks which was extremely close.

It doesn't help that Seven keeps making the break longer. The 2006/7 season break was 6 weeks in duration. In 2008/9 this increased to 7 weeks. And then last year, 2009/10 it was extended to 8.

I can just imagine the outcry over here if Corrie or EE took 8 weeks off, even in the summer!

No surprise to see Merlin recommissioned for series 4 filming from March 2011.

Given its success against X Factor.

Hopefully with the launch of BBC 1 HD on 3 November (now testing on Sky BTW) and the switch to HD for most programming in 2011 Merlin will also go HD.

Well said, im waiting for channel 5 to start advertising the show especially when
Spoiler

Bare in mind that Neighbours is picking up a lot of viewers on 5Demand like an extra 10,000 viewers, Channel Fiver and +1, saturday afternoon omnibus etc.

I like this idea. The Friday episode could be ditched as generally there are less viewers around for this one, especially in the summer.

At the moment Channel 5 is airing around 220 episodes a year (the maximum possible) with 8 weeks and bank holidays off. Under your idea it would air around 208 a year, or 204 with a 1 week break for Christmas. The latter would put Australia 16 episodes ahead per year so that eventually some years down the line C5 could return the Friday episode.

Of course this would mean that episodes would not always air on the days they were intended for, but I don't see this as a massive issue as H&A rarely have big Friday cliffhangers nowadays.

As for whether it would be considered, I'm not sure. I think it could be a more practical option than the current arrangement.

What gives Digital Spy the impression that Merlin will now start in early-2012? The reduction in episodes I imagine is so that the can fit it in Winter 2011 without moving it. So it'll be:

Doctor Who - 3rd September to 8th October
Merlin - 15th October to 17th December

Or:

Merlin - 3rd September to 5th November
Doctor Who - 12th November to 17th December

I'm not sure they'll have it finishing on Christmas Eve, really. The first scenario is more likely though, as Doctor Who has a Christmas Special. (also avoids starting Who in late August, as feared initially)

Anyone know how Surf's Up did as it wouldn't surprise me if it rated higher than Bad Santa which should have aired at Christmas despite being the funniest if not the Unchristmassy film you can watch.

The Wrong Com season is doing okay but it's evident that comedies don't rate that well whereas The Adam Sandler and Will Smith season rated better.

Surf's Up achieved a strong premiere audience of 1.58m (7.6%) cementing C5's position as the family favourite every Sunday.

Where Eagles Dare also performed well Saturday teatime, crushing BBC Two's Match of The Day Live. (1.2m v 0.9m)

That's good as it's on par with what the Disney films were getting, they're showing The Witches next week which does well. Wonder when they'll show Open Season as that came out in 2006 and they've already shown Surf's Up which came out a year later.

The Sunday films are a great alternative especially as Channel 4 aren't showing any at the moment but they do need more terrestrial premieres and their output deal is with Sony Pictures who do have a great backcatalogue but not as varied compared to what ITV and Channel 4 have although they do the have the rights to some recent Warner Bros films plus a few Disney and Pixar films.

Not been reported within a ratings article, however the live rating has been reported here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010...one-grand-prix

(although I think you may need to void it - race was delayed be over an hour, and coverage was extended on BBC1 by 15 minutes, then switching to BBC2)

Anyone who has the re-run rating, please shout.

thanks to TEN taking two weeks off for the Commonwealth Games, Five is now only 5 weeks behind TEN with Neighbours, make one more week up over Christmas, and thats 1 month, not really an issue at all.

It won't be void in this case. Sporting events are often delayed or overrun and are therefore not affected by normal DSRPG rules. Many thanks for the link.

I think ITV did that when they were airing Home and Away. I think it was just for a few months, though.

BBC America does okay but it's nowhere near the likes of USA or TNT or even the second tier kids channels like Disney XD and Nicktoons. I think if they could have a more organised schedule and perhaps enter more co-productions with the BBC, ITV etc they could higher ratings. Doctor Who is the record holder with 1.2m

Masterpiece/PBS is in more homes and has more prestige dramas like Lewis, Wallander and will the likes of Sherlock and Downton Abbey in the coming months and BBC America can't really compete.
