Predictions on tonight?

Children In Need- 8.9m
I'm A Celebrity- 7.7m

I think it will be interesting how close the two shows will go, I'm sure CIN will come out on top though.

It helps they got a big boost to the drama budget, as wonderful as the one-offs are, they should be doing more series as they can't rely on Shameless forever.
That is true. I am surprised at how long Shameless has lasted really as I didn't think it would have that much mileage in it.

CIN is getting its annual roasting, IMO it's just a bit of fun and raises money.
The first hour of CiN is always the worst. Too much padding, not enough goodies. They save the best stuff until later in the night when more people are watching.

I couldn't sit through the whole thing but it's okay to dip in and out of.

I'd be surprised personally if CiN doesn't clear 9m. It's been incredibly consistent over the past few years-

2009 9.8m
2008 9.7m
2007 9.4m
(overnights for the 7pm-10pm segment)

Can't think of any reason why it wouldn't rate similar to the above, so my prediction is 9.5m.

The CiN Corrie/EE sketch was well timed. Started at 8.58, presumably right after Corrie had finished on ITV1.

Sky Media (who run Sky's advertising wing) have released a very detailed document about Sky's plans for Sky Atlantic.

It includes a potential schedule outline and also reveals that Atlantic will also have showcases from Sky Arts and Sky Movies. The movies that it lists as showing on Atlantic are You Don’t Know Jack, Temple Grandin,The Lovely Bones, Avatar, The Blind Side, Up In The Air and Invictus. Overall it says there will be 30 titles show in a year, 8 of which it says will be premieres.

In Treatment moves to Atlantic from Sky Arts.

Audience wise they say there will be a slight male bias and they want the programming to feel 'iconic, exclusive and immersive'. The 'tone' will be 'smart, individual, passionate and American'. All just words of course but the first real insight into what Sky's plans are for Atlantic.

Very good-should be a high point ratingswise and the whole thing has been very watchable.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting,

Concerned about the schedule. Hour slots, commercial breaks and HBO programmes don't go together!!

Got to wait until Q4 for season two of In Treatment!!

some longer term storylines, such as what his name buying the shop, would be needed.

The 8pm slot is perfect for Coronation Street- starting at the BBC1 junction gives it an obvious boost. Emmerdale held up much better than I thought it would and EastEnders slightly worse. It'll be interesting to see how next week's schedule works as well; Emmerdale has the head start over EastEnders, I'm A Celebrity starting on junction and Coronation Street at 9 followed by another I'm A Celebrity.

Didn't catch much of CiN this year, but suspect it will be down a bit on past years. The whole thing seems to have passed by unnoticed, not really seen anything happening at work today or in town with a CiN theme. Plus ITV's aggressive Corrie and IAC scheduling to damage it further.

Be surprised if the 7-10pm show clears 8-8.5m in the overnights.

Lots of EastEnders fans caught out by the hour-long Emmerdale last night. Not really sure how things will go with hour-longs of both next Thursday. EastEnders got just over 6.5m for last year's November hour-long, against two ITV soaps, but it was a big episode with a wedding and a murder.
BBC1 needs to come up with an answer to the hour long EmFm problem. It hurts EE, as ITV knows full well, and when someone puts up the 2010 average figures for the soaps in a few weeks, we know the EE figures won't give a true and fair view.

I wonder if BBC1HD's performance might improve if they got rid of the silly channel identifier permanently on display?

If I had HD, I suspect I would still be watching the "clean" SD broadcast rather than the fundamentally compromised "higher quality" version. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of HD viewers think likewise?

Ah yes, ITV's aggressive scheduling of Corrie and IAC in their regular timeslots. Oh when will they learn?!

Some major scheduling news from the US.

American Idol is moving to Thursday nights as part of a shake-up of FOX's midseason schedule. Performance shows air on Wednesdays for either 1 hour or 2 hours until April when it will be 90 minutes with new comedy, Breaking In, at 9.30pm. Breaking In was only greenlit today and was originally a pilot for September but not picked up. Quelle suprise - the results shows are back to 60 minutes despite originally being scheduled for 30 minutes in May.

The move is a bit of a problem for ABC as it limits their opportunity to launch new shows in their currently vacant Thursday 8pm hour. The Big Bang Theory now goes head-to-head with Idol - but that shouldn't make much difference as Idol and Modern Family co-existed rather well for much of last season.

Paula Abdul's Live To Dance on CBS airs on Wednesdays at 8pm starting on January 4th with a 2 hour premiere. It will clash with the Idol premiere but the LTD order is only 8 hours so it won't be competing for long. Then Survivor takes the slot.

Bones now goes head-to-head with CSI and Grey's Anatomy at 9pm and has a huge lead-in.

Fringe is demoted to Fridays. It's chances of making it to season 2011/2012 are increasingly slim.

Million Dollar Money Drop runs Tuesdays at 9pm on Jan 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th and Feb 1st as well as Thursdays at 8pm on Jan 6th and 13th. The Tuesday show follows re-runs of Glee which is taking January off.

Superbowl Sunday is February 6th and, as previously announced, Glee airs there. It returns to its regular slot on February 8th and now won't have an Idol lead-in.

Also on the 8th, Raising Hope returns in its usual 9pm slot with new comedy Mixed Signals at 9.30pm. It had previously been lined up for the post Idol slot that Breaking In now occupies.

If this works, expect X Factor US to occupy the same slots next year.

Meanwhile, American Idol continues to buck up its ideas ahead of X Factor US. Nigel Lythgoe has axed the dreary top 24 round, they'll now go straight to the top 12. Presumably hoping to exercise the same kind of control over the top 12 that The X Factor does. As previously announced the age limit is now 15 (at time of audition - 16 at time of live shows) and he promises a wider range of talent (jazz, country, indie). They'll also work with a band and dancers for "an awards show-style performance", make a music video and "promote themselves" in a string of new challenges. The theme weeks will be limited to music of certain decades.

Although it doesn't get the Idol lead in, it does how confident FOX are about Glee. Not sure about Breaking In but I think Mixed Signals should do well after Raising Hope. The only worry is Bones against CSI and Grey's and The Big Bang Theory will likely slip a bit against Idol as will the ABC comedies on Wednesday. Fringe is officially doomed as it's been shunted to Fridays.

Have ABC or CBS announced their midseason schedule yet.

No mention of the quality, original homegrown programming that was announced to be included in the mix in the origional press release. Unless they were just referring to the Sky Arts stuff. Would be nice to see the few million pound per ep their currently spending on their upcoming UK sky 1 dramas re-focused into putting together a stellar writing team and cast for a single 10 part HBO/Starz-esque UK (or co-produced) drama for this channel.

BBC appear to have updated their schedules for week beginning 11th December, not sure if the timings will change slightly, they may do - but this looks more confirmed than before:

Saturday 11th December
17:35 - The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson (R)
18:05 - Strictly Come Dancing
19:05 - All New Celebrity Total Wipeout
20:05 - The National Lottery Saturday Night Draws
20:20 - Casualty
21:10 - BBC News
21:30 - The Armstrong and Miller Show
22:00 - Match of the Day

If that stays the same, then it means the opposition for The X Factor Final is Total Wipeout, Lottery, Casualty and the News.

Sunday 12th December
17:30 - Jimmy's Food Factory (R)
18:00 - Countryfile
19:00 - Strictly Come Dancing: Results Show
19:30 - Antiques Roadshow
20:30 - Inspector George Gently
22:00 - BBC News

UK TV Guide doesn't make it clear whether Inspector George Gently is new or a repeat, but either way, less opposition than last year for The X Factor Final. Strictly moves half an hour to avoid it as well.

Crimewatch is on BBC1 at 9pm on Tuesday 14th. Dig 1940 takes Wallace and Gromit's slot at 7:30pm on Wednesday 15th. Royal Variety Performance is on at 8pm on Thursday 16th (as noted yesterday by C.M.W.). Apprentice documentary Why I Fired Them on at 10:35pm on Thursday 16th. Thursday's 9pm block for that week only as a result moves to Friday.

Until the last couple of years, this wasn't the case.

That CIN raised £2m LESS last night than last year could point towards a drop in the ratings?

Still think showing the Royal Variety on Sunday 11th would have been a bold and interesting move by the BBC. Strictly at 7pm leading in to the RVP from 7.30-10pm. A valid alternative for those not enamoured by the overblown Cowell karaoke contest, TXF's ratings kept in check, viewers will flip from TXF during ad breaks bringing up RVP's average and depressing TXF's, and then the large numbers watching TV at 9.30pm can tune in for the grand finale of the RVP.

And if they instead believe a Thursday is the best night for it (presumably split 8-10 and 10.35-11.15, stupidly), then why not the previous week to keep the live Corrie in check.

Some on here moan about the BBC being too aggressive. I sometimes think they're not aggressive enough. Their 11/12 December line ups equate to the white flag. Cowell must be rubbing his hairy little hands with glee right now...

Another thing - why are the SCD performance shows shorter this year? Presumably the couples are only doing one dance instead of two?

Why?

The schedules suggest 8pm to 10pm only, with an Apprentice documentary currently down at 10:35pm...

EDIT: Apparently Inspector George Gently vs. The X Factor Final on Sunday 11th December is a repeat.

I despair...

Proof that George Dixon is an ITV double-agent, if ever it was in doubt.

WTF are the BBC playing at???

And you know they will be the first to splash all over their website on Monday morning that "TXF watched by 20m" even if that's the absolute peak of peaks and the whole 2 hour bloat-fest only gets 15m...

Hmmm, Children in Need down slightly, but big drop for ITV after 8:30pm. I'd say poor for ITV, if anything.

EDIT: Didn't realise ITV's exclude HD, so IAC could be ~6.3m.
