I suppose that's as good as anything. Whether or not an entertainment show can generate enough buzz from a one-off to carry it into the next series, I'm not sure.

Elton John is OK for Sunday. I think George Michael had far more potential for making headlines.


I'd guess it will come down to how the ad rules and whether or not they can squeeze one extra break into the show itself rather than after. I doubt they'll give up 4 minutes of advertising immediately after the XF final.

As for XF Australia, that's a good finish for it but it has certainly underperformed. If it comes back, they'll probably fire a few people!

A private member's bill is being introduced in the House of Commons to move UK time in line with Central European time.

I know it seems unlikely but apprarently there is a real prospect of this getting substantial support.

If this happens CL games will have to kick-off at 8.45pm!

I suspect many people would not like this (ie fans, police etc) but there wouldn't be an alternative.

They are pefectly entitled to two hours of soap on Christmas Day but shouldn't expect to have the right to schedule it however they like and expect the BBC to work around it.

Fair enough, but people just seem to be making a moutain out a molehill. We don't even know ITV's or BBC's full schedule yet. ITV aren't purposley scheduling there soaps opposite EE. Just like BBC aren't scheduling EE purposley against EE/Corrie - it's just the way it works out - there's only so many hour in the day. 3/4 hours of primetime with 3 hours of soaps to fit in.

Look, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't put it passed ITV to move the soaps later in the evening every night in order to boost 9pm programming - it would be a disaster, but I think they'll do it in order to launch Bleakley and Chiles in an evening show opposite The One Show.

Having said that, I've just realised that would only mean FOUR episodes each.

Given all the potential clashes, I feel it's impossible to find the perfect schedule for Corrie and Emmerdale until the Champions League is away from Wednesdays, in which case I'd go for:-

Emmerdale: Mon-Fri (x6)
Coronation Street: Mon, Wed, Fri (x4)

Dropping an episode of Coronation Street is probably very wise. It's only a Street, and hasn't the scope to have so many storylines running at the same time, unlike Emmerdale which feels so much larger. Having the double episode on the Monday as well gives the week a good push, as Wednesday and Friday 7.30pm episodes rate very well in the winter.

Perhaps Sunday's should be left clear of soaps for now, but I've always seen Coronation Street as suiting a Sunday - establishing quality lead-ins for reality shows and feature-length drama.

Soaps have quite a broad audience, hence why they work better earlier in the evening. 7.30pm is the perfect time for a soap. For example, EastEnders always seems to top 40% share on Tue/Thu.

Don't forget Chiles would be away quite a bit in the winter doing football so who are you going to pair with Bleakley then ?

Yikes - a big drop for Accused. Maybe the show was too heavy last week and people wanted something more light hearted like IAC, which was up from last week's rating. It's a shame really. Very good rating for The One Show earlier on and apart from Accused, a solid evening for BBC1. Brilliant stuff from Miranda to get its highest overnight rating yet and it'll be interesting to see if the BBC promotes this to BBC1 for its next series or lets BBC2 keep it.

Daybreak and Lorraine did quite well by their standards yesterday, even share-wise both passed the 20% mark. Tonight at 8pm underperformed compared to how the 8pm filler has been doing this year, with ratings usually close to 4m. IAC did well to rate up from last week and last year's equivalent rating, though not too surprising after Gilian's antics the previous day.

Decent for Coppers in a tough slot and good to see The Gadget Show up above the 1m mark. Although Extreme Fishing is rating worse than previous series, I think it should be given another series because ~1m against that type of competition isn't bad. It'll be back over the 1m mark once IAC ends.

Fantastifc ratings for One show. So Matt Baker effect not just on Countryfile.

Stupid idea imo. The famous Prime/Greenwich/international Meridian after which our timezone is named runs right through our country plus it would cause just as many problems as it would solve.

agree about Accused, thought it would hold up well against IAC, I guess maybe people were not keen on the story.

I mean how many "here's the bad stuff" dramas have we have about Afganistan/Iraq in the last 5 years. It could be viewer fatigue

Accused was not easy to watch last night. Tricky subject matter and quite violent in places. I'm not surprised its audience fell for that episode, and I reckon it will bounce back to around the 4m mark next week.

Not too concerned about Extreme Fishing's performance on Channel 5 either. It started the series very promisingly - actually rising from 1.4 to 1.5m across the first two episodes. It's fall below the 1.0m mark has clearly coincided with the return of I'm a Celebrity, which has swallowed up a lot of casual viewers. I predict it will rise to around 1.2-1.3 once that finishes.

Daybreak did rather well yesterday. Still some distance behind the nation's favourite Breakfast of course, but roughly speaking any day when they log a share of 20% or higher is good business for them. Perhaps there are signs that the tide is finally turning and the programme is gaining in popularity after a rocky start to say the least. But as I say it needs to be hitting that 20% share mark more often.

Virtually all the soaps did well yesterday, with the possible exception of Hollyoaks which logged a mediocre rating on C4 and a poor rating on E4. (540k, down over 20% week-on-week)

C4 Sales have removed all data for Monday except shares. Not sure what's going on there as it was all online a short time ago.

Scrubs (R) on E4 logged a particularly high rating of 400k at 6pm. And that is also where I got Hollyoaks' first look rating of 540k.

Put the 'gritty BAFTA' drama on Two and move the childish comedy to One.

Bad news for Channel 4, they've (rather stupidly) poached George Dixon for some bizarre reason.

Bad for Accused last night, but good night for BBC1 - in particular The One Show. Very good rating for Miranda, I wonder if this will remain a BBC2 comedy or jump to BBC1 in the near future?

Solidly good ratings for ITV Breakfast, while I'm a Celebrity did very well to be up on last year's edition on the same day. Good rating for Channel 4 at 9pm in an incredibly tough slot.

George Dixon has made some scheduling decisions for BBC1 that haven't worked for me. Was it all down to him or the Controller as well?

Good to see Day Brake views going up for ITV.

You're right, that would be a disaster. BBC One would have a realistic chance of winning the 7pm timeslot with The One Show for the first time; Emmerdale would get crushed by EastEnders, remember it only beats it when it gets a head start for the hour-long episodes; and cutting the number of Coronation Street episodes isn't really going to benefit ITV1.

To be honest I can't see any of those things happening. They could maybe try Bleakley and Chiles at 5pm - but it would be far too risky for 7pm where they've already got something which works incredibly well night after night.

I'd go as far to say that they could possibly kill Emmerdale in the same way they killed The Bill if it clashed with EastEnders and Holby City on three nights a week!
