It did settle around 0.7m, then for whatever reason dropped horribly around the 14th and 15th October and that audience never returned.

I suspect we'll see a small rise next week as half term will have been denting it this week. Lorraine's drop yesterday was weird as so far her show has being doing well this week, benefiting from parents who are normally up for Daybreak watching Lorraine instead due to half term. That'll be why Breakfast has been steady this week, as if you lump Daybreak and Lorraine's ratings together there probably wouldn't be much difference from last week to this week.

When comparing Daybreak with GMTV it's best to include Lorraine as GMTV's ratings also included her show and that presumably inflated their ratings too. When you do that, you get an average of about 0.7m for this week, which I believe is roughly the same as (if not slightly above) what GMTV got in school holidays this year. I suspect the 6:00-8:30am section of that got similar ratings to what Daybreak has had this week. Not that this should be used to defend Daybreak, as these ratings are not acceptable and something must be done, but I don't think the overall 6:00-9:25am performance is much, if any worse than GMTV earlier this year.

Surprisingly high for Jeremy Kyle too - no idea why? This Morning didn't seem to benefit though and Loose Women is looking a little low. Their afternoon line-up seems solid though based on the figures posted the other week, and Dickinson's Real Deal really suits the 3pm slot and Midsomer repeats rate well at 4pm. Titchmarsh could probably do with being moved back to 3pm where he did well before though, as whilst his ratings aren't terrible The Chase would probably be getting 2m or so in that slot at this time of year. Golden Balls was getting ~1.5m this time last year and that's been axed.

I believe the drop for Daybreak coincided with the release of the Chilean miners when BBC Breakfast hit 1.8 million and viewers probably realised that the hard-news content of Daybreak was non-existent if they wanted to follow what was happening with the miners. Re Lorraine: wasn't she actually off this week and Kate Garraway doing it ?

Anyone know how Daily Show did on More4 last night. While show was an Obama interview, which was featured on a fair few news articles and mentioned on C4 News. Should have been a high for it.

In the good old days they used to report it on C4 Sales. Maybe Paul Millar can help?

I'm pretty sure yesterday's overall 6-9:25am rating would be down quite a bit compared to how GMTV performed earlier this year in the Spring half-term.

Also just to do a ratings comparison, in the same week in 2008 which was also half term, GMTV's Monday, Wednesday and Thursday average for 6-9.25am was 1 million. This week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 6-9.25am ITV have averaged 0.7m, a decline of 30%. [I haven't included Tuesday because I can't find a Lorraine rating for that day]

BBC Breakfast is up 17% vs. same week in 2008.

The Million Pound Drop extended tonight, will finish at 23:30 instead of the advertised 23:20.

They did - which was absurd given that they had to know it was not on at all next week (all TV mags printed last week knew it).

Moreover, they told viewers to reset their series link for the new BBC 1 HD starting next Wednesday.

That will have thousands of viewers reeling in frustration. It is necessary because the programmes are switching channels from BBC HD to BBC 1 HD and series links will not carry across channels.

BUT there is no BBC 1 HD in the EPG listings yet and it probably will not be in there till next week. Maybe not even until Wednesday as it is usual not to add new channels until the day they start.

Sky Channel 143 for instance just shows the programmes that will be on BBC HD next week Wednesday to Friday (when it will not by then be on Channel 143) and there is no way at all to set any series links or recordings for BBC 1 HD as told to do as no such channel is there.

So why announce after priogrammes (and Waterloo Road is by no means the only time that BBC 1 have made this announcement so far this week) when it is going to get viewers attempting to do the impossible.

Indeed in Waterloo Road's case if its off air until January no series link has ever carried that far so would fail anyway. (They last a few weeks at best).

The BBC could quite easily have put the correct BBC 1 HD and BBC HD schedules up from last Wednesday as the EPGs run a week ahead. That would have made all these messages sensible and possible to implement by trhe viewer.

But to choose not to do that and then mislead viewers asking them on air to do something they cannot possibly do seems doubly rather silly.

I'm pretty sure there's some Million Pound Drop stunt casting on tonight's show - word "on the street" is that the couple who lost over £500k on the last question in the last series will be back for another go at the show tonight! Might boost ratings if word spreads.

BBC1 HD I've noticed Doctors will be on it as it's airs at 1:45pm over on BBC1 but at 4:00pm they have thw BBC HD showing but thats not the same for all shows (Holby,Waterloo road ect)

Not so much the scheduling I'm criticising (in the end it made sense for Gavin and Stacey), but the short term memories of people around here who forget that every year something crops up which we all think the BBC must get into the schedules to allow it to finish before Christmas, but for whatever reason it begins later and then moves about over the festive period.


No surprise there then. The trailer said it all - it begins by looking promising at being a more traditional travelogue around France, but then the words "celebrity" and "competition" are thrown in and you know it's pointless TV.

I think it would probably have held it's own most nights - probably not as stable, but I think Tuesday and Thursday could definately have topped 3m. Actually in a way it's main competition would be from Hollyoaks Later, hence why they've kept them apart (and usually time MPD to begin once Later has finished).


Considering that doesn't include +1 Hollyoaks not suffered hugely from a move from 7pm considering recent first look ratings. Proven this week though axing First Look won't boost the C4 audience . I just hope in the end it pays off for Hollyoaks as the show is finally moving in the right direction - they just need the ratings to follow them.


Was hoping it was them when Davina hinted at "familiar faces" last night, rather than two Z-listers!

ABC might have something to celebrate about as Charlie Brown helped their 8pm slot to its average level, after first two weeks of My Generation flop and GA repeats. Plus, Private Practice held steady on their 18-49 demo and their total viewers numbers increased a bit. According to ABC press release, PP have won the 18-34 demo (10pm slot) for six consecutive weeks (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/10/29...-5-weeks/70125).

NBC comedy lineups improved for their Halloween specials. Some say that the Shrek special may have helped a bit. Of course, The Apprentice looks dismally the odd one out. The Vampire Diaries beat The Apprentice in 18-49. CBS proved to be total viewers dominant, as well as performing solidly for their 18-49. The Big Bang Theory still gets terrific numbers, although their 18-49 numbers are far off from last season, where they would get 5 to 6 points almost every week, IIRC.

Very contrived episode of Million Pound Drop. I think C4 might have killed this one stone dead with that pathetic stunt.

Well done Channel 4... killing off something which actually could have a long lifespan on it, had you not been stupid and messed with the format.

I honestly don't know how they manage it but they always have to take things too far and try and over-engineer everything. Net result tonight was a major fail. Viewers will have seen straight through that.

I agree, MPD was dreadful tonight and their pathetic little stunt may cost them in the long run. Can't see myself rushing to watch it again after that, although frankly I wonder how much longer it has left anyway as the novelty has really worn off. Tonight may have fast-tracked that decline though. C4 messes up again - it would be easy to blame Endemol but it hasn't happened with their programmer on other channels such as The Cube (although that's a much stronger format anyway). Makes me wonder what would have happened with Deal or No Deal had Noel Edmonds not put his foot down and refused to do celebrity specials.

Didn't C4 turn down The Cube initially? Given their track record at the moment, thank goodness for that.

And yeah, I remember reading about how keen C4 were to do celebrity specials of DOND not long after it became a success but Noel refused.

They're obsessed it seems. Celebrity Big Brother, Celebrity Wife Swap, Celebrity Come Dine With Me, and soon Celebrity Coach Trip. At least Celebrity Secret Millionaire is off limits!

Yeah thank goodness C4 turned down The Cube originally, I dread to think what they'd have done with it (plus Justin Lee Collins was going to host it which would have been an instant kiss of death).

Had they got their way with Deal it would probably be dead now too, as it is in the US now after they started doing silly stunts to gain publicity. Whilst Deal here is nowhere near as popular as it once was, it still does very nicely for them in the afternoons, but they could well have thrown that away.

They're by no means the only ones obsessed with celebrity - ITV also do far too many celebrity shows (although they have cut down) whilst BBC1 also get in on the act from time to time, but C4 do seem obsessed at the moment! Celebrity Coach Trip is scraping the barrel. Celebrity Secret Millionaire would be amusing though as the Z listers probably wouldn't get rumbled!

The Cube has celebrity versions coming up too. In fact, Schofield tweeted today saying that an episode featuring Kelly Holmes is being shown in 3 weeks time.

I think people are over-reacting to celebs being on The Cube. If it's in moderation (one couple per series), it'll be fine. As soon as I heard George Lamb was going to be on it, I knew people in the DS thread would criticise the show because there's a lot of George Lamb haters on this forum. Yeah, perhaps the questions they got were easier, but I doubt most people will have cared. It's only the DS lot who really get angry by this sort of thing - they're the same people who say they won't watch The X Factor again due to a bit of controversy but still watch it the following week!

Perhaps the series 3 ratings won't be as good as series 1 or 2, but I would say that would be expected anyway, even if no celebs had been on tonight, simply due to the novelty of the show wearing off.

Yes but I doubt that the celebrity specials of The Cube will be so contrived. It's not the fact that they had a celebrity couple on that bugged me in particular, and I don't particularly mind George Lamb, it's that the questions were blatantly easier and the whole thing felt so manipulated. I normally agree with what you've said about controversy, and The X Factor is a clear example of viewers saying they won't watch again but they do, but something about tonight felt very uneasy to me, and I didn't like it at all.

The Cube is an Objective production not Endemol.


They recorded a pilot with JLC. According to Broadcast at the time they deemed the cost per episode to be too expensive for the slot they had in mind so turned it down.
