Interesting chart about Coronation St and Eastenders. I do remember Garry Bushell in 2006 taking perverse delight in watching EE lose viewers and saying the soap could be dying. However, it rallied round and now seems safe. CS's decline of 27 pc can probably be explained on three counts: overkill with episodes( the 8.30 Monday one was supposed to be for 6 weeks), abysmal acting and storylines and possibly some of the elderly audience dying out and not being replaced.

HIGNFY seems to be being dragged down by a poor lead-in and a (sadly) turn-off show following it. Despite no real competition from the other side.
Maybe HIGNFY is one of those shows that does work better on Friday? It still feels not right watching an established "end of the working week" show on a Thursday.

I agree. The jib cam shots while nice for tv anoraks who like to see the full studio do nothing for the core audience. A lot of tv shows start out with lots of panning shots before cutting them back. Sky News when they relaunched back in 2006 or 2007 did a lot of those wide shots but soon cut them out. BBC News back in the late 80s & early 90's did quite a few too
Just seen advert for I'm a Celebrity (basically a snake pulling the ITV1 logo apart).
EDIT: Instead of doing long 30 second promos, it seems they're doing 5 second promos of something pulling the ITV1 logo apart - a lot more effective, and means it'll air a lot more.

They can fiddle with the Daybreak camera shots, the set, music, titles and graphics all they like. They can alter the number of inches between the presenters as much as they want, switch St. Paul's lights on or off, and schedule as many trailers throughout X-Factor and Downton as is possible.
But until they get the editorial content right, this show isn't going to work. Even now, no-one at ITV seems to understand this simple but fundamental point.

Watchdog gives HIGNFY a respectable lead-in....its audience this year is significantly up on last. Anyway, as 9pm is the traditional "appointment to view" slot, a strong lead-in isn't the be all and end all (if it was, everything ITV1 scheduled to follow Corrie would perform well - which it, er, doesn't.
The truth is that Thursday is wrong night for HIGNFY - BBC1 have tried to break an engrained end-of-the-week viewing habit and it hasn't worked. They should do a straight swap with New Tricks right away.

Yes its hard to believe the kind of figures achieved, and regularly too. Due to its high profile omnibus, and the fact that they were added into the main show EE was the number one watched show for not all that far short of three years consecutively in the late eighties. Neighbours was the talk of Britain and Bread is the prime example of overkill when the number of episodes turned it into a virtual soap. Allo Allo 17 million on Christmas Eve is amazing too.
Also a stark reminder of how strong LOTSW was in the eighties taking primetime on Christmas Day with another 17 million.
Comparisons with 1980s ratings are meaningless, though, as there was no multichannel then.
Might as well reminisce about the days before most people had TV sets, and when radio comedies like Round The Horne could get more than 20 million listeners.

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned but it's surprising there is a pretty consistent iPlayer audience. Understandable people using it to catch the first episode of something they didn't watch or when they've forgot about something, but you'd think if they watch something on the iPlayer and intend to watch the series they'd switch to the more traditional methods of either watching live or taping, especially with series link.

not sure, I just know, I did a timer record for Merlin (started at 19:55), as I thought it might clash with TV Burp (finished at 20:00), but when I flicked from ITV 1 to BBC 1, Strictly was still done.

The standard rate is 42 minutes per hour.
A couple of years ago, FOX experimented with something they called "remote free TV". Fringe and Dollhouse launched with 48 minute episodes.
IIRC, there was no benefit. C3 ratings (actual advert viewing) didn't improve, they didn't get the kind of advertising premiums they had hoped for and IIRC, DVR usage wasn't reduced and they canned the experiment after one season.
It will be interesting to see what effect Halloween has on this weekend's ratings. Last year X-Factor lost 1.4m viewers on Halloween and recorded its lowest live episode rating of the season. Strictly on the other hand, was not effected one bit. This year, Halloween is officially tomorrow (Sunday) night though so it could be that we see a decline then rather than tonight.
Interestingly, if X-Factor falls in a similar manner tonight as it did last year on the Halloween Saturday, Strictly could well be within 300k or so of X-Factor, given how much stronger Strictly is this year.

New Tricks is hurting it more than The Event, I expect it will go up when New Tricks finishes, I wouldn't be surprised if Five move it to a new slot when its come back from a hiatus.
