What gives Digital Spy the impression that Merlin will now start in early-2012? The reduction in episodes I imagine is so that the can fit it in Winter 2011 without moving it. So it'll be:
Doctor Who - 3rd September to 8th October Merlin - 15th October to 17th December Or: Merlin - 3rd September to 5th November Doctor Who - 12th November to 17th December I'm not sure they'll have it finishing on Christmas Eve, really. The first scenario is more likely though, as Doctor Who has a Christmas Special. (also avoids starting Who in late August, as feared initially) |

I think ITV did that when they were airing Home and Away. I think it was just for a few months, though.
The year before they also had to drop it for a month as they were catching up too quick, but not in the summer, during April I think. They replaced it with Lie Detector, the series from L!VE TV, which flopped massively and they took it off before the month was out. I've said this before, but since we've started a new part I'll say it again, also in 1999 they took the lunchtime showing off for a week for snooker and William Phillips in Broadcast referred to "a real display of true viewer loyalty" because the teatime ratings skyrocketed, it had almost the same number of viewers for that one screening than it usually did for both put together, suggesting that absolutely everyone who normally watched at lunchtime watched at teatime instead, the difference presumably only being those people who watched it twice. It used to be Home and Away had a massively loyal audience, they can't be many shows that could cope with a year's break, as it did when it moved to Five. And ITV should never have dropped it as it left a right chasm. |

It was in steady decline on ITV1 and was only attracting 4 million viewers at the end, very poor even for 2000, and 11 million down on its peak in 1989. Also ITV1 had seen how Australia had fallen out of love with soaps, cancelling all but the big two in the nineties, and didn't want to be associated with a failing product. ITV1's approach to daytime since has been a mixture of chat shows like Alan Titchmarsh, quiz shows, the veteran This Morning and the morning favourite Jeremy Kyle. They would argue that this works just as well as showing imported soaps . |

If Home and Away's ratings were declining, it was probably thanks to ITV fiddling about with it. But Home and Away's ratings dwarfed absolutely everything else they tried in that slot for years and years and years, and it was utterly careless to lose it. |

These threads are getting shorter and shorter - always cut at points where you'd like to quote something too. Anyhow, back to slagging off The Xtra Factor. I just don't get the logic in basically axing the contestants from it, while we learn little from the judges with them taking phone calls all the time. Quote:
BBC America does okay but it's nowhere near the likes of USA or TNT or even the second tier kids channels like Disney XD and Nicktoons. I think if they could have a more organised schedule and perhaps enter more co-productions with the BBC, ITV etc they could higher ratings. Doctor Who is the record holder with 1.2m
Masterpiece/PBS is in more homes and has more prestige dramas like Lewis, Wallander and will the likes of Sherlock and Downton Abbey in the coming months and BBC America can't really compete. Skins and Shameless trailers for the US versions show it's practically the same script as the original. Now, I can understand MTV not risking the UK version of Skins, but I'd have thought given the chance a cable channel like Showtime might be willing to risk the original. After all, network US TV, plus Hollywood, is full of Brits nowadays, so although not everything might cross the pond well, I think there is definately an appetite there which the more niche channels could fulfil. |

You're right, in the final few months they showed it, in the spring of 2000. They were really rationing it in those days, presumably to drag down the figures since they were about to lose it - much like when the Beeb swapped aroud Neighbours and Doctors when Neighbours was about to go. That was the same time they dropped the lunchtime showing in most (but not all) regions, as part of a brilliant daytime revamp in March 2000, when they moved Loose Women to 10am and Trisha to 2pm, and then two weeks later, moved them straight back again. Ha ha ha.

Some US stuff

NBC's Chuck is pre-empted on November 8 for former President George Bush interview. Link: http://www.ryanseacrest.com/blog/wha...medium=twitter The Hills franchise may be over (for now) as Whitney Port said that the spinoff, The City is canceled. Even though the ratings improved slightly compared to the first season, now that Jersey Shore and Teen Mom became a larger ratings hit, The City's ratings seems tiny compared to the two. |

Anyone have any predictions for The Million Pound Drop? (had 2.1m/2.2m last series) I thought it'd be lower this time because of Channel 4's recent poor ratings, but the reaction on Twitter seems bigger than last series (its trending worldwide), so hopefully it'll be over 2m again.
![]() Edit: And their online game has crashed as well. |

Has the link between Twitter and ratings been proven yet?
I'd have thought perhaps slightly higher myself - do we know if viewers are more likely to stay up later on darker nights rather than during the summer? |

The problem with MPD is that nobody wins anything. It's rapidly losing its novelty for me for this reason. I don't know whether it's the game or the contestants they're choosing.

Another significant one, BBC1 Wales have moved QI on Friday to 2235 and Graham Norton to 2305 to make way for a local programme at 2030.

I think it might improve on the last series to around 2.4m. Remember last week in the 10pm slot The Inbetweeners had 2.99m over on E4 across half an hour. Should be able to pick up a good number of ex-Inbetweeners viewers I would think as well as other casuals.
The fact that it finished early might hurt its full slot rating a bit, but we will get the tape checked figure as well. |

And finally, ABC's new shows and additional episode orders
Link: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/10/25...-sisters/69564
Link 2: http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/...eason-pickups/ ABC has announced today that No Ordinary Family and Better With You received full season orders. Detroit 1-8-7 and Brothers & Sisters are ordered additional episodes. As for The Whole Truth, 13 episodes will most likely be their maximum. Though, this Wednesday will be their true test to see if they can air the whole 13 episodes as the next two Wednesdays are pre-empted (http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/...-prove-itself/). |

How has Five managed to catch up with Home and Away considering how far behind they got? I presume they must've aired over Christmas etc. while it was having a break on seven.
![]() Great figures for both Strictly and The X Factor, plus Downton Abbey and Countryfile are performing exceedingly well. Any news on how TV Burp did? It seems to have lost momentum and, after watching Saturday's show, I cannot say I'm surprised. |

They've got Body of Proof, V and Off The Map so they can afford to cull a show like Detroit, IMO. Ideally, they'd have Body of Proof after Desperate Housewives (given the Dana Delaney link) and Off The Map after Grey's. But B&S and Private Practice seem to be locked into their slots for eternity! |
