How is a show that could come out as the most watched show of the year in a couple of weeks only be commendable?? You have high expectations. More people are watching TV because of XF, which is why there is always a high number of people watching TV when the XF Live Shows start. It happened last year too.


Yeah, I guess you have a point there. As we've seen through various series of talent shows it's the controversial acts and stupid acts that get the public talking. As you say the final needs someone like Cher to spice things up. A Matt, Rebecca, One Direction final, which is what is being predicted would be fairly boring. The best final (ratings wise) would be Cher, Mary, One Direction imo...but it won't happen.

Back to tonights ratings, anyone think Jack's final episodes in Corrie could just make 11m? They've been heavily promoted and there's a lot of drama with it too, plus the return of Vera. Jack is one of the few remaining Street legends, adding to that the bad weather, I hope the episodes do well.

Wow at some of those ratings. ITV did outstanding with all their shows, The Cube, X Factor and DA.

But two ratings you must not forget, are Strictly and The Only Way is Essex.
Fantastic for Strictly, and despite people before Essex started saying it would flop, last nights ratings got the 2nd highest (just after the first episode)

This is it though. At the end of the day people will argue, gossip and deliberate in their millions about Katie and Treyc and Wagner and whoever the others are, and yet the minute the series ends the vast majority will never give them another thought. The great achievement of Cowell is to get so many people to care about them for the duration of the series-as lets face it only a few actually in XF history actually have any real talent.
Many shows have achieved 15 million in the four channel past but its quite something these days and lets face it, no awards were being given out last night -it was just a run of the mill result and all but one of them will turn up again next week. Its hard to see anything getting in the way of XF-if Wagner actually wins it will assuredly nail the concept as a joke (if it isnt already)-but will it stop people tuning in? I doubt it.
This is the cold winter for the BBC.The unstoppable XF with the addition of three solid weeks of IAC and the Coronation Street bandwagon surely growing to its own crescendo will make this a ratings fest over the next month and contrive to limit the BBC's options quite dramatically-better get the tin hat RS!

(Id love to know what the BBC's and Danny Cohen idea of "the next big thing" for Saturday night is to be. I dont think we ought to hold our breath though-that is likely to be quite dangerous)

Just huge numbers all round last night - everything seems to be hitting highs. Frankly, I've nothing to say about the XF - this years rise has defied all logical analysis so I think we'll just have to sit back and see where it takes to next. Downton Abbey has been a huge success - I imagine they'll give it the XF lead-in once more, but it'd be interesting to see just how well it could cope on its own feet. At least to the tune of 8m+, I reckon.

Strictly did brilliantly yesterday too - hitting more big series highs. I'm surprised given that its a fairly lacklustre recorded show so doesn't really have the live "buzz". Still, I suppose the snappy run time helps it. And the Countryfile and Antiques Roadshow wrapping the BBC puts around it is perfect alternative scheduling.

Do we know that the second series will air next year-there was some suggestion in The Guardian that it might be in two years time-also if it gets the XF lead in again presumably Doc Martin would go to Mondays?

Downton Abbeys rating are amazing really and I am pleased for tv drama as a whole.

I am used to seeing all the reality tv figures that high, but a new drama on itv doing that well and standing up there with the reality shows and passing some soap ratings too, is really positive for the genre. It shows viewers want to watch good drama on tv done well.

I am sure the X factor lead in helped, but it can't be relied on for everything, sure the first couple of weeks maybe, but to carry on getting those figures and building on them every week is down to the show alone.

Just bumping these up as from the officials it appears Channel 5's movies gave both of these soap omnibuses a run for their money!

I actually cant remember a similar period drama on ITV for decades -certainly not one as sumptuous as DA. Presumably this is the result of ending shows like Heartbeat and going in another direction-though Heartbeat was getting similar figures before its decline was hastened by ITV playing around with it too much.

For anyone interested BTW, MediaTel report a peak audience for the Brazilian Grand Prix of just under 6 million. Apart from the fact it was on earlier that previous years, it'll be the worst Brazilian figure since 2006. I'll try and get both averages tomorrow if Media Guardian don't update.

They start filming in February which as far as I know is around the same time as the first series. It will almost certainly be back at the same time next year.

No Emmerdale in the top 20 and Coronation Street only reaching #7.

Sorry I missed this earlier. Yes Channel Seven has overtaken Nine as the most watched network in Australia. This happened in 2007. Prior to that, Nine was the most watched network for 7 years. Upon losing its crown it was forced to drop its "Still The One" promotional campaign.

As for why, Seven has definitely upped its game programming wise whilst Nine has relied too heavily on shows that are a bit past it. I think complacency cost them their position. Also, for reasons unbeknownst to me, Seven's news and current affairs shows overtook Nine's. And that was significant, because for the most part anyway, they are the most watched programmes on a daily basis.

Another question for BARB w/end 31 Oct final figures. The CITV share % is 0.7% up from 0.3% the previous week. Is this figure correct & what is driving it? Half term perhaps?

Sky Movies Showcase is up to 0.4% after the paywall was removed for 2 days. Predictably the top 10 is dominated by movies shown on those 2 days.

BBC1 should do well over xmas and new year but I agree these next 6 or so weeks are going to be tough. Corrie is surely a dead cert for most watched show of 2010. People on here have been underestimating it. 50 years is a massive achievement and I expect we could see a peak of 20m for the first Corrie Live showing alone given the mass hype. XF should bag second place nudging EE into third.

Exceptional evening for ITV1. It's amazing that TXF keeps growing every year because before every series you'd think the ratings hike will stop at some point. Yesterday's episode was the 2nd most watched episode of TXF ever (only behind last year's final) and up 4% from last year's equivalent episode which was an immense rating anyway. It really is a stunning set of ratings and I'd imagine TXF will pass EE: Live's rating in a couple of weeks time, if the controversial contestants are still in it.

A bit surpised that Downton Abbey got its highest rating of the series last night (by over a million too) because I thought the extended length of the episode would dent it a little bit because audiences tend to tail off from 10pm onwards, especially for ITV shows. 10.1m is remarkable - obviously it helps airing off the back of TXF but I don't think anyone would've predicted pre-series that its last episode would rate 2.4m better than the first one! Usually the last episode rates worse by that much not better. It's also interesting that DA performed better than Doc Martin which was in the same slot last year. With filming of the next series starting in February, its likely DA will air at the same time next year.

Countryfile and SCD rated excellently too, with SCD getting I believe its highest non-final rating ever. The scheduling for it is perfect and of course it looks like Ann Widecombe is a big draw to the show this year. I can see the final getting about 13.5m if the trend continues, and especially if Ann makes the final which is entirely possible! The First WW did about a million worse than I expected because these sorts of documentaries usually hold up quite well even against massive competition. But with it being just a one-off and Garrow's Law starting next week, BBC1 should do 1.5m better next week in the slot.

Coronation Street looks set for its best ratings in a while tonight. I predict over 10m for both episodes, with a possible peak of 12-13m towards the end of the second episode.

When Vera died in 2008, it aired on a Friday IIRC and pulled 12.5 million in the climaxing 15 minutes.
