Exceptional night for ITV.

I am thrilled for Downton. I said before it began airing that I hoped it would rate well because it's exactly the type of drama ITV should be commissioning more of. Not just period drama but well told, well written drama in general, even if it is a bit of a risk. It paid off well for them and I hope this gives them the confidence to commission more shows of similar quality.

As for The X Factor

I thought JedwardMania last year would be the peak. I really did. I think we all expected a slightly decline this year but not even higher! It's defying all odds.

Strange goings on again with ITV1 HD's ofiicials.

Taggart appears at no. 4 with 506,000. Same timeslot as Downton which got 508,000.

What does this mean? That 506,000 were watching Taggart on STV?

Why does this happen so often?

Oh well, I guess no one's interested in discussing Coronation Street's big episodes tonight - we'll just wait for tomorrow for people to be impressed by the large numbers and impressive peak then.

I still think it's a point of interesting discussion, what with it getting the entire front page of the Mirror today, being widely reported across the web (143 articles on Google News about Jack's death) and remaining in the Top 3 Most Read on BBC News website all day so far. It's guaranteed to produce impressive ratings and I'm surprised no one's mentioned it.

Is anyone else thinking about this, or is The X Factor's success / Daybreak's failure going to remain near enough the only thing discussed in this thread?

Hmm, good point. Agree on Sky3, but not sure about BBC News. Wasn't the ITV1 simulcasted on BBC News and Sky News? Anyone remember?

It's swings and roundabouts, really. At the weekends of course X Factor and Strictly will dominate discussion after all they are the biggest rating shows on TV at the moment, although I imagine next weekend and the proceeding weeks we'll also see discussion about I'm a Celebrity.

The only reason Daybreak has been dominating discussion in weekdays was because of its poor half-term figures, so of course it's going to be a matter of discussion when not much else stands out. Although I do think we'll see more Corrie discussion on here as we head towards its 50th.

They gave it to Sky but just on Anytime a day later.

It wasn't simulcast on any other channel.

The fact is, Sky's debate was a multichannel programme and it was watched by 4m+ albeit on three different channels.

I haven't seen this reported elsewhere, but a website called TVTV.co.uk, in its description for the Monday 22nd November, 20:30 episode [contains spoilers] of Coronation Street, at the end of the description, it notes:

Quote:
“The next episode is on Thursday [25th November] at 9pm”

I haven't seen that reported elsewhere, which is interesting. On that night, Coronation Street will have to move because I'm a Celebrity is on for 90 minutes (or a time equal to that) because of Football the previous night. EastEnders is also on for one hour because of Children in Need the previous Friday.

The above scheduling, if true, avoids EastEnders. As thus, the schedule if the above is right for that night, could be:

19:00 - Emmerdale
20:00 - I'm a Celebrity...
21:00 - Coronation Street
21:30 - I'm a Celebrity...
22:00 - ITV News at Ten

Note: The above has not been confirmed by ITV, so treat this as a rumour for the moment.

This also raises the potential for a split scheduling strategy on the following night, with Coronation Street on at 19:30 and 21:00.

I should note the spoilers don't suggest a post-watershed episode is needed, though.

Channel 5 Sunday movies confirmed for the next couple of weeks:

Sunday 14th
16:55 Open Season (Network Premiere)
18:40 Planet of the Apes
21:00 10,000 BC (Premiere)

Sunday 21st
17:00 A Bug's Life
18:55 Ghostbusters II
21:00 Speed

Great picks guaranteed to get bums on seats.

And The Variety Club Showbiz Awards, hosted by Justin Lee Collins, are being dumped in a 4pm timeslot on the 21st.

STV must really be feeling daft now. Opting out of run of the mill dramas is one thing, but not showing the biggest new drama to be on ITV for years really is another matter!

Aren't you being a bit presumptuous?

It'll probably just get a respectable bounce, something around 10.5m-11m at best.

A fellow poster on here. Angustay, thinks differently!!

Quote:
“ITV's drama Downtown Abbey has been accused of stereotype characters, predictable storylines and simple mistakes that most costume period dramas don't overlook such as tv ariels, street signs and the list goes on.

Now it seems writer Julian Fellowes has been accused of plagiarism and stealing stories from many famous publications including Little Women. Not good for ITV's reputation especially when they are promoting it as an original drama and insist it is historically accurate. After the disaster of Daybreak this is all ITV needs. It seem's STV may have been right yet again not to show this as it would have reflected badly on them to.”

BBC World News I think simulcast it ITV wouldn't let any channel available in the UK simulcast it though, not even CNNI or Al-Jazeera (who simulcast the other two debates). BBC News did show it at 23.30 the same day though

With Downton Abbey joining Doc Martin in getting 9 or 10m, will ITV be looking at the figures for some of their other expensive Sunday dramas, and thinking "Hmmm"?

Before Abbey's success, the Doc Martin ratings could be looked upon as an exceptional case, but having these two dramas rating way ahead of the others must surely cause some head-scratching.

Not really. Things like Lewis & Poirot repeat much better than Downton.

Ok Downton is getting close to 2m in its early Sunday repeat showing but if they re-ran it in the summer it would struggle, whereas crime dramas do better.

Erm they could print some real news but to the likes of the Daily Star TXF is THE news, unless Katie Price dies and it goes into mourning for a week.

MediaGuardian excelled themselves today - just three ratings in its report on what was quite a big night for TV. Oh joy!

I've been thinking about how well Downton Abbey might repeat if they tried it on ITV1 next summer? I think it might not do as well as the Doc Martin repeats with their 3.5m or thereabouts. Would probably be expensive too.

Maybe, they'll repeat it on ITV3 instead.

The continuity announcer on ITV HD last night said that Downton would be back 'next year'. So I assume that is official.
