I dont follow five that closely. It doesnt seem to me to be making much traction in the ratings. Its got lucky with Liverpool being too awful to qualify for the CL but I doubt they had anything to do with that!

They seem to be totally out of the game on weekends and are really left with trying to make an impact on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

They aren't making much if any money on these shows (same as H&A and Neighbours). They are paying more than they make in ad money and tying up a big chunk of their total programming budget so I doubt that they are overly pleased with them. Thats part of the reason RTL sold them.

so what shows are growing? I know they set a target of a minimum audience of 1m per show from 8-11pm. Are they meeting this self-imposed target every night for example?

Pretty good for Channel 4, Celebrity Coach Trip at 5:30pm yesterday - 2.14m (13.2%). Much higher than recent offerings in that timeslot. Looks like their highest rating of the day too (exc +1).

Good evening for BBC1, Turn Back Time held onto nearly all of its audience from last week which is excellent. Looks like BBC2's ratings are down compared to last week especially with MasterChef Professionals over. Poor for Ocean's 13 on ITV1 but I wasn't expecting it to get much more than that tbh because the Ocean's 12 premiere had about 3 and a half million in 2007, so 3 years on (lower ratings generally) and in the Tuesday FlopZone with less interest in the movie, it was always going to struggle to get over 3m. If possible, I think they should have re-run a Harry Potter movie between 8-10pm especially with interest in the movies high at the moment due to the release of Deathly Hallows; could've got 4m over the two hours.

I wonder what C4 will do with Ramsay next year because although his new show has been consistent, 1.5m is poor. Not just poor for Ramsay but generally anyway - C4 should be trynig to get 2m on Tuesdays at 9pm. I know The F Word's ratings fell in recent years but I dont think it rated as bad as his new show so maybe reviving it could be an idea? As for C5, solid for CSI Miami - yeah it's down compared to a couple of years ago but it's hardly surprising because the show has been running for so long that eventually viewers would drop out at some point and it's happening in other countries too. It's doing fine.

Next year they're going to dispense with all food and just commission "Ramsay Has A Big Scrap With His In-Laws" instead. Ratings gold!

Out of the game on weekends? No way! On Saturday perhaps, but the Sunday movies have been extremely popular. On Sunday 31st October it tied Channel 4 including +1 (beat C4 exc. +1) in the All-Day Shares and was only 1.2 share points behind BBC Two. That is an extremely rare achievement for C5 on any night of the week. It even beat ITV1 whilst the Coronation Street omnibus was playing out.

Whilst it will never be able to compete in terms of raw numbers with ITV1's primetime offerings on that night of the week, it is offering an increasingly popular alternative.

I have no idea how much money individual shows are making, so I won't join you in speculating.

Most nights. Saturdays are the only problem at the moment and Thursdays can be hit and miss when the football isn't on.

As for growing shows: Five News at 5pm, Europa League Football, The Hotel Inspector, Extreme Fishing, Rory & Paddy, Sea Patrol UK are all up. Cowboy Builders is stable despite presenter change. New hit shows include Eddie Stobbart. Neighbours and Home and Away are also heading back up after a period of low activity.

The US imports are quite isolated in being down at the moment, and The Mentalist hasn't been helped by extremely challenging Friday night opposition. The Gadget Show is also a little down but still meeting the 1.0m target.

Stacey Soloman is a bit of a cop out in terms of celebrity but she could potentially be television gold. Some decent names this year.

Leno has only got himself to blame really with the whole 10pm show and Tonight debacle, he is beating Letterman but no longer with the same wide gap.

I wonder if CBS and NBC have ideas who will replace Leno and Letterman should they retire.

ITV is broadcasting in Black & White now? can it no longer afford to rent colour cameras?

Shame Gail Porter didn't make it as per tabloid speculation but I kind of figured since she is due to appear on The Wright Stuff Friday morning.

I'll be watching. Should be good material for checking the brightness & contrast levels on my TV!

That's what happens when senior management get their hands on the programming.

Wonder if maybe it's time Channel 5 decided to move Home and Away out of its peak time slot and ask for a reduction on the rights. I was checking BARB and only two episodes scraped the bottom of the Top 30 Channel 5 shows for that week. Clearly the soap, which always had 3 million viewers fewer than Neighbours at its peak, isn't doing a massive amount for Channel 5 and hasn't been a talking point since the nineties.

Only thing what looks good there is Les Miserables, but I suppose we should be grateful that there is no Peter Kay.

I'm surprised really they didn't opt to make that a weekly primetime series - Coach Trip could pretty easily be fleshed out into hour long episodes.

Of course though C4 can often find itself performing better at 5pm than 8pm - and talking of which replacing Celebrity Coach Trip is "Four in a Bed" - the B&B version of Come Dine with Me which was Three in a Bed in a prime-time slot last year!

I don't think its Lenos fault. It's NBC who decided in 2004 that Conan should replace him in 2009. That was stupid, things were working great and Leno didn't want to go.

The problem is what to replace it with though. Five ran The Boss Is Coming to Dinner at 6pm in the summer when Home and Away was off air and it flopped so much that the last week got moved to a 1.15pm slot (shame it wasn't such a bad show). Being shown in August won't have helped the ratings but it was still no match for Home and Away ratings wise

The challenge for Five would be to find shows capable of at least 800,000 (about the lowest Home and Away goes) for most of the year. And going by Five's track record in early evening that might not be very easy

I have wondered though if cancelling the 2.15pm airing would boost 6pm (I wouldn't cancel the Fiver airing since that is rather important to Fiver)

That's a big return date for it, and I'm not sure how it'll do. BBC1's NYD line-ups have been variable over the past few years, and with it being a Saturday this time I can't see them bothering with EastEnders. It will be interesting though to see how both channels approach the night - I'm thinking there will be a big film premier on at least one channel and I suspect ITV may run TV Burp's Review of The Year there as it would be fitting.

I like the idea of Primeval returning on NYD but I'm dubious as to how this series will rate. The last series did fairly well but suffered from airing in the Spring/Summer. I hope it can return to it's 2008 level for the next series but that may not be so easy as it's been a long time since the last series aired.

More4 schedulers - what planet are they on? I know it was shown in April on C4, but Robin Williams: Weapons of Self-Destruction probably deserves a better timeslot than 11:00pm Saturday, especially if you're going to spend money advertising it.

And Sharon Horgan's new comedy they are putting on Sunday nights in that well liked, memorable and ever convenient timeslot of 10:40pm! Who on earth is going to discover it there when other channels including C4 itself are midway through programmes?

Add to that the two hour documentary on Joan Rivers last night which didn't finish until nearly midnight, and must have bombed since C4 Sales left it out of their report, I'm really starting to worry about the direction More4 is heading in.

Giving repeats priority over new content in the schedule is a mind boggling strategy. If you don't have faith in new commissions to bring in the viewers, then why commission them in the first place? Burying them in the schedule is hardly going to help their chances.

Over dramatic Glen. Next you'll be telling me people are only sticking with the show out of sympathy!

It's still reaching 2m odd viewers an episode. The split is roughly 0.6m 6:30pm, 0.4m 2:15pm and 1.0m 6:00pm. And whilst it is true that the 6:00pm showing is currently low for its usual high standards, it is nowhere near low enough to even consider moving it out of that timeslot.

Dropping the 2:15pm showing would be a logical step forward and may happen as Channel 5 will soon need to make room in the daytime schedule for Vanessa Feltz' new show.

But really, talking about Home and Away as if it's a big problem when the 90 minutes between 6:30pm and 8:00pm are averaging below 400,000 viewers a night is ridiculous and so I won't entertain the idea further.
