I don't mind rasp, Mariah Carey's belting is scratchy above E flat, but I think it sounds quite good.
Here is one of the only live performances of We Belong Together, I've linked it to just the final chorus:

Lyrics in bold are what she sounds scratchy/raspy in:
We Belong Together, baby
When you left I lost a part of me
It's still
so hard to believe
Come back, baby, please 'cause
We Belong Together
Who am I gonna lean on when times get rough?
Who's gon' talk to me till the sun comes up?
Who's gon' take your place?
There ain't nobody better
Oh, baby, baby
We Belong Together
~ (her voice cracks at the end of the note if you listen).
So, repeating myself, I don't mind raspiness but I think Alex's sounds a bit more unhealthy than, say, Mariah's.
Christina is another case though. I'm one of the people who find her shouting rather annoying, but one of the people who find Mariah's "screeching" mesmorising.
