They said it was singing the Travis version so I'm not sure why people keep trying to imply he copied it. It's not like the Cher situation where they made out several times that was her own idea when it was already a song.

To compare the clips posted. I actually prefer Matt's voice to that of Fran.

I thought that on Saturday. Have to say I prefer Matt's voice to Fran Healy's though. If he doesn't get to the final I'll eat his hat!

I thought it was the Travis arrangement when I was watching Matt.

Still good though. Was he playing live guitar though I wonder?

I'm a guitarist and I would say he was. I think it was a blinding performance all round. Can' t imagine Cher managing anything this good. Like to see her try. I think we will just see more of the same with her though because Cheryl will never risk anyone finding out how rough her protege really is.

Looking at the title I really thought this was going to be another 'get Matt' thread in which the OP was going to suggest Matt had launched an unprovoked attack on him, or indeed his baby. Since, apparently, his eyes are too close together and he steals hypothetical sugar.

Erm... glad its not

OT I prefer his voice to Fran's too.

We've had this thread before. We get it, it's similar to Travis' so what? Every acoustic performance will be similar.

But Matt had more emotion, sang it better and ended it phenomenally. Matt's a good guy and wouldn't take what he did as his own. But how he did, how he sung it, was all him. So, it doesn't matter.

These silly comparisons to belittle other people are pointless.

I dislike Cher, thought Matt was good, but not incredible, and is not the best vocalist in the competition.

But to say Cher couldn't do what he did, is like saying do you think Matt could do anything like Cher.

It's apples and oranges.

And Matt obsessives need to stop trying to say Matt didn't rip-off the Travis cover, you're only digging a deeper grave...

He did, but so what, it was a good, solid and credible performance. That's it.

It's not ripping off. It's actual name is acoustic.

Would he want to do what Cher did i.e not sing or rap very well and get lost in a huge performance. Nope! because he is a musician. I am judging this as a music competition so you see the comparison was fair.

If it was a fair and square talent competition on musical/vocal ability, then it would be a Matt Vs Rebecca final. Most of the others don't really have that "something" or in some case much talent.

The point is a lot of people swear blind Cher can sing, dance and rap... I don't get it... but there you go. She has a large enough fan base from what I gather to keep getting through.

I'm also a guitarist (like a poster above) and am sure he was playing guitar for real too.

His performance led to one of the funniest judge's comments ever (though at the time I was shouting at the telly, lol).

Cheryl said something along the lines of, "I could almost believe I was watching something unplugged, like an acoustic version." No shit sherlock!

Your name is a good clue EDIT, darn, Jock was there before me.
Thank you for a supportive thread. I feel a bit disoriented by it, but in a nice way.

Is Cheryl a natural blonde, by the way?

I agree. I watch Cher's "performance" out of curiosity rather than to be wowed by her vocals or her virtuoso rapping skills (not). She is definitely style over substance. So far she has fulfilled all my (low) expectations. I watch Matt, on the other hand, because he has a genuine talent that doesn't need all the whistles and bells. I thought he was pretty captivating on Saturday. He doesn't need the big production. In fact, I think he'd find it all pretty embarrassing.

Yes he was and there are even YTs showing the cords he was playing too.

Of course there must be similarities as they are singing the same song. But Matt's was different both times on the punchline and they were much better than Travis. All the way through the song there were differences and if you can't hear them you are not competent to judge.

Says the Cher fan, lol

Saturday night, we were playing about on YouTube with the kids, having them hear music from our youth. (I'm late 30s, hubby early 40s) Rap was prevalent then. Indeed, the song Cher performed on Saturday was in the charts when I was still at school.

There are loads of acoustic versions of this song on the net and surely no-one seriously expected him to do the upbeat Britney version. This post and the OP are spot on they versions are not the same at all (other than obviously being acoustic versions of the same song). In my view Matt's version is far superior both in terms of his vocal tone and quality but also in his phrasing and ability to build the song which makes it more interesting

but I admit Travis did it before him - but then this is the X Factor he has a truck load of his own stuff he could do but they won't let him
