An absolute asset to the UK music community and a true diamond in the mire of shallow scene-hugging broadcasting and mindless populist music.

John Peel famously ranked Captain Beefheart as his favourite recording artist ever....

My personal favourite memory of JP is hearing him play DJ Shitmat on radio 1. My jaw was on the floor, breakcore does not get national airplay

I'd always listen to JP's show and end up with a massive list of new and exciting music to explore on the good man's reccomendation.

Here's to you John, from one music lover to another.....

BTW if anyone wants some aural reminiscence of JP I can thoroughly recommend This CD

I prefer this compilation:

Lots of great essential Peely stuff. Much missed.

A couple musicians I am aware of thanks to JP

Joanna Newsom - The Book Of Right On

DJ Scotch Egg - Scotchausen

...and apparently JP's fave song ever, which kinda explains it all...it's just a great song, that you feel in your bones, nothing more, nothing less

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks

I miss him, he was wonderful. Only ever met him once, briefly, in 1997. He held a door open for me, lol. A real gentleman and a true legend! I always listened to his radio show growing up.

i find alot of jp fans didnt get the message...(im not refering to anyone here in particular).

jp championed new music throughout his illustrious life. i find many jp fans are stuck in some retro time bubble praising him for discovering/championing their musical style and nothing since. if jp was around today he wouldnt be stuck in retroland, all his life he sought out and promoted good new music. he would NEVER declare 'todays music isnt as good as it used to be' like many retroheads do.

I agree, the great thing about John Peel was that he was always looking out for new and interesting music, and he had a great knack of finding it as well. Often in the most unexpected places. I wonder what sort of stuff he'd be championing today if he was still around.

Absolute legend, there's been no-one else like him either before or since.
