I am 100% non-techie. Basically, my parents have just got a video recorder from a charity shop without a remote or manual. It's a grundig and the first problem was that it had a pin code. I googled and found out how to by-pass it. But it's not tuned in and needs a remote to do this.

The model is GV9110 and on ebay there is a remote with this model number mentioned, but he's describing it as a TV remote. I think it's just that he doesn't really know. Does anyone know if a remote like this would work without any unlocking etc? ie if I point it at the VCR will it work straight off? The link is:

That's clearly a VCR remote.

Yes it is! But would a remote like this that is listed as working with various models work without any unlocking codes etc is what I'm really asking. Can I just point it at the VCR and hey presto?

The description of the eBay item claims that it will operate the model of VCR you have.

in retrospect, perhaps it wasnt a god idea to buy without a remote. there seems to be so much functionality in a remote that just isnt possible from the set.

I'd say it's almost certain the remote will work. Most manufacturers use the same IR codes form most of their kit. Even a TV remote is quite likley to give you some functionality, even if it does not have all the buttons needed.

As far as I am aware they can if they have been safety tested by a qualified technician.

There are a few firms on the internet that will supply a replacement for your VCR - I've done it quite a few times, just google the model number of your VCR and add " replacement VCR remote model XXXX or what ever and see . I'd send you the URL, but can't find it!
