I haven't used a iPad but having used other tablets I would say the main selling point of the iPad is the OS and how Apple have put it all together.

These clones may look the same but I bet they don't impress in use.

It only has Internal: DDR2 256MB memory.

The DDR2 256MB mem is for running apps in, actual storage is in the 2GB SD card

Next do a 10inch, similar spec for the same money:

The thing about these tablets is they they have a resistive screen which means single finger touch (or stylus).

I'm sure they are OK, but I think they would get quite boring very soon.

Capacitive screens with super-speedy processors are what tablets need and the iPad has.

Yes but is also has a +£400 price tag.

Most people want a <£150 pad for the price.

This one is likely resistive, which isn't quite as good as a capacitive/multi touch, but for the price its good.

And whilst people would like super-speedy processors, did you miss the CPU spec on this one? Its got a 1gHz CPU - and like 99.9% of other android devices it'll be an ARM chip. So therefore the core CPU is probably pretty close to the iPad. No ideas on the GPU performance, but they're claiming 1080p playback - something the iPad cannot do .....

errr no.

Good for decoding but a bit slow for most other stuff.
Its an older ARM 11 like on the iPhone 3G, HTC Wildfire.and most budget smartphones.

It is resistive.

Errr yes - the spec sheet specifically states 1080p, which is a result of the GPU. On that count its actually much more capable than the iPad, which is restricted to 720p.

Yes, its slower than a Cortex device, but not by as much as the blurb would have you believe. For the price this is a well specced bit of kit. It even has HDMI out!

You had best link it then,

As much a result of the unique design of the CPU as far as I am concerned.
They might work in tandem but the ARM 11 is still adept at decoding.

This DIsgo sounds very similar to the Next tablet.
But no doubt with tidier software and luckily no hatchet amateur review to condemn it.

Isn't the word on the street that Android 2.1 isn't much cop for tablets, and we all need to wait for the arrival of Android 3.0 equipped devices, probably in the new year?

Is the change not simply to cope better with the higher screen resolutions and grant official rather than unofficial access to the app store?

Some like the Vega are getting a firmware update anyway.
And maybe it will work just like the iPad and simply expand the glut of dodgy phone apps to fill the whole screen.

They state : FULL HD support/ MP4 SP/ AVI (XVID,H.264,DIVX)/ 3GP

However a bit of digging shows that this bit of kit is possibly related to the zenithink zt-180, although that was a 10" device. Which was marketed as a Cortex device, but only had an ARM11, but could do 1080p MP4 (but no other formats). And despite the claims of a 1gHz CPU it actually had an 800mHz cpu.

I think for the time being its best to steer clear of this Disgo device until there's more clarification on whats under the hood.

ARM 11 CPU - "SIMD instructions which can double MPEG-4 and audio digital signal processing algorithm speed" From the wiki.

Related to the zenithink zt-180, HTC Wildfire, LG GT540 and the iPhone 3G amongst many.

Doesnt sound a very professional review either unfortunately

Normally the advice to wait for better is pointless because there is always better when it comes to technology.

But with "Pads" it does seem like much better things are just around the corner, maybe in time for christmas. At reasonable prices.

Current rushed-into-production pads all seem like underpowered rip-offs to me.

That is a pretty damning review, and there's no reason to believe that the Disgo will be any better.

Terrible battery life, terrible performance, build quality that sounds truly dire ..... its got absolutely no positives.

Don't buy anything with ARM 11.

oops that should includes the iPhone 3G and HTC WIldfire. With their crappy build qualities too?

Disgo actually have an OK reputation for their cheap usable devices.
This tablet could do with being £150 and having apromise of a quick Android 3.0 update come new year.
Archos have a budget tablet(the home 7) that currently uses an even slower non ARM 11 CPU. It is reckoned to be getting upgraded to a faster ARM 11.
To be able to compete with the likes of the DIsgo no doubt.

I can't quite work out why a 10" tablet sold by a clothing shop quite comes into the conversation.

It is actually getting very decent but basic initial reviews at Play.com.

Most of the newer resistive screens all seem to be vastly improved and thus very responsive.

It is currently down to a sensible £150 which is not bad for something to does a few more things than the iPad.
I wonder if the HDMI slot does 1080p?

alan the disgo 6000, the one in the title is still showing at £180 today? (179.99)
Tassium

It was at £30 less a few days ago on that site.

The Archos Home (7", Android, 8GB, WiFi) is £129 at Play.

Maybe for messing around it's OK?

In that case, you won't need to worry about which one to buy!
