More portable, possibly better battery life, handier to browse sat on the sofa .... although I definitely prefer my netbook to most of these pads - its faster, higher resolution screen, loads more storage on board. Each to their own though

If it's the sameish cost as a Kindle, and you can access the Kindle app, AND it works in the dark (<- most important bit) then there's a point right there!

This is now well overpriced with Creative releasing their own custom Cortex A8-HD 7" ZiiO tablets at £200.
HDMI, SD card slot, full 1080p HD encoding and decoding plus Creative quality sound.

It looks like we might have a glut of tablets going the way of the hula hoop.

Tablets are fine for the odd five minutes but they produce neck-ache in me beyond that time scale.

A 7" tablet for £50 with some degree of speed might catch on as a sort of "news-tablet" (nablet?) with email, TV guide and so forth for households.

I'm really tempted to order something today, because I want to get e-booking, and my Desire is straining my eyes a little bit. I would get a Kindle but don't like the absence of decent light for reading in the dark... but then pads with TFT screens hurt your eyes! Oh choices choices!

TFT screens are poor for reading from for more than a few minutes.

Part of the reason is I think the slightly different view that each eye gets, TFTs vary so much horizontally when it comes to contrast/colour/brightness.

It's ok with large screens that are quite far away but "book distance" reading from small screens is another rmatter.

I know - this is why I would have got a Kindle by now, because of the whole e-ink thing, but it's just the absence of a decent light, although one would assume that there'll be a decent enough third-party offering in the wings.

Amazon do a cover with a built in pull out LED light powered from the kindle. Not cheap at £50 though..

I've read loads of books using the kindle app on my Desire, the screen brightness doesn't really bother me, what I do find annoying is the almost constant page turning!!

Not sure about the whole tablet thing. Think I'll wait for a bit and see how they go with Gingerbread....

Eh? I've just spent an hour browsing the internet on the iPad before reading that comment.

Needless to say, my eyes are just fine.

Now the Toshiba 10" Folio has supposedly popped up for order.
Tegra 2 plus all the usual consumer connections.
£329 for the 16GB with a 2 year warranty.

2+ times faster than the 101 but also 50% heavier.

It seems the big names are repeating their mistakes of the past and making over-specced expensive playthings.

Apple is a special case, almost a religion to those who buy into it. They will pay any price.

I've always found that extended reading on an LCD close up can be quite difficult on the eyes - you often have to look away.

When you're talking about reading a book you tend to concentrate quite closeup - I definitely get less eye ache from reading an e-Ink display than I do from an LCD.

You stated, in an earlier post, that (and I quote), "TFT screens are poor for reading from for more than a few minutes". The only inference I take from that is that reading TFTs for extended periods of time is uncomfortable on the eyes. Or perhaps you use some other means for comprehending the printed word?

Anyway, I disagree. I read all the time on computers and laptops and, yes, my iPad.

It didn't need to be stated - it was needless, you are quite right - I can obviously see, I'm not blind, despite hours daily looking at screens that are 'poor for reading', but I stated it anyway, my eyes are fine.

Indeed, though tablets specs may turn out to be a special case when having to find a use for the darn things.
While I would be ok with even a Macbook Air the thought of having an iPad is scary.

It's exclusive to PC World/Dixons for the rest of the month.

Like it or loathe it, the iPad has really cornered the market and made tablets popular and viable. They currently have around 95% of the Tablet market. But like the Samsung, they're expensive. There is a big potential market at the budget end which needs filling, but things have been moving quite slowly.

I had a bit of hands on with the Galaxy Tab the other day there and came away impressed.

I can see how the smaller form factor would suit some people, and Android is a fair competitor to iOS (I use both), but the price, even factoring in carrier subsidy, is too close to the ipad to have real impact.

Whatever anyone thinks, Apple have the brand, and Samsung - don't they make TVs?
