well the odds are quite simple when you get used to them

For instance one may see something which si

100/1 that means if you put £1 down and win you will get a £101 return, £100 profit

If you see something which is slightly more complicated like 5/2 it means you put £2 down and get £5, obviously the more money you put down like £20 down you would get £50 return etc;

If you see something which states 4/5 or 1/3 etc; then those odds are not very profitable unless you place large stakes which can be risky, for instance put £5 on 4/5 odds and you will only get a a profit of £4 ontop of your original stake. Same way for 1/3, you put £3 on and get a £1 profit.

Hope this helps, any other questions PM me

The proportion of the 1st number to the second number represents the chance of the event not happening to the chance of the event happening.

So Matt being 6 / 4 means the bookies are suggesting there is a 4 in 10 chance of him winning or put another way 6 chances to 4 chances that he will not win.

Wagner being 100 / 1 means the bookies are suggesting there is a 1 in 101 chance of him winning or put another way 100 chances to 1 of him not winning.

The actual betting works as SpoonfedVomit wrote, and the higher odds against the more you can win for the same amount of money.

For Matt, bet £4 at 6 / 4 and he wins you win £6 ( and get back your £4 stake ).

For Wagner, bet £1 at 100 / 1 and he wins and you would win £100 ( and you get back your £ 1 stake ) or you could say bet £4 and it all just works in proportion, then if he wins you would win £400 ( and you get back your £4 stake.)

Clearly if your selection loses, you just lose the amount you staked.

Matt has more chance of winning since the odds are shorter. The shorter they are, the less money the bookies stand to lose if it happens.

convert odds x/y into probabilities using y/(x+y)

6/4 is 4/(4+6) = 40% chance of winning
100/1 is 1(100+1) = 1% chance of winning

Good explanations above but in your example (highlighted) this would be offered as 2/1, reducing to the lowest common denominator.
