Which SD card for Canon 500D SLR camera?

Could any experts offer me some advice on the best SD card to purchase for the Canon EOS 500D?

I've always used Kingston but have been recommended Scandisk and Transcend.

I'm not sure what class of SDHC card is best for the 500D (4, 6 or 10) and whether the speed will actually make much of a difference for fast photo shots and some video.

Also, I don't know what kind of capacity is best for a few hundred photos on a fairly high res plus video. I'm using a 8GB in my digital compact, but wondered whether 16GB or 32GB would be better.

I'm happy to spend a reasonable amount to get the most out of the 500D, but don't want to spend more than is really necessary.

I bought a 16GB Sandisk SD card from Amazon. It was the cheapest available at £17.99 including postage. The card is supplied from Guernsey so there is no VAT and because it costs under £18 there is no duty to pay.

16GB allows over 3000 photos or about an hour of HD Video. My thoughts are that what holds a lot holds a little.

What class speed SD card did you buy sirpipe?

@Ian-d: Good question, my first response is I haven't a clue!

It is an SDHC card with a number 4 on the front ... just over where it says 16GB.

Amazon now showing the price as £16.49.

I hope that helps.

Ian, if you're going to make use of the full HD video recording I would recommend a Class 6 card. A class 4 will probably cope but only as long as the subject matter isn't too demanding and even then you may experience the occasional dropped frame.

As above, class 6 is generally regarded as the minimum requirement if you're going to be shooting HD video. Just bear in mind that the video function on SLR's is half baked at best and if you're going to be shooting a lot of video I'd seriously consider buying a dedicated video camera. It'll be a hundred times easier to use and the results will be much better.

AF while shooting is slow as heck and the motor noise is audible in the soundtrack. (which is only mono, by the way) Panning too fast results in tilting verticals as well, not good.

Thanks all, the video footage will be limited, but useful; it will mainly be for high-quality resolution images.

Would there be any benefit in a class 10 card or class 6? Just that the difference in price for a Transcend is very little.

Not while in use, no. However if you're moving large amounts of data from the card onto your computer via a high speed card reader it'll probably take less time to download. Personally I use a Sandisk Extreme III, works well.

If you're going to do multiple bursts of fast sequential pictures, then a faster card might be quicker to 'catch up' and let you start shooting again. Then again, maybe the speed is limited by the camera's electronics rather than the card. All in all, I don't know!

Aye, I suspect writing to cards on my 550D is more limited by the camera's I/O controller than the card itself.
