Its not a virus issue StuL - I'm pretty well equipped there
The reason the exposure is greater is because its inherent in BT that you upload as well as download - the problem there being twofold as I understand it.
1) the act of uploading exposes your IP and necessitates the use of Peer Guardian/Protowall/Blocklist Manager etc which whilst good aren't foolproof.
2) By uploading you cease simply to be an end user but an active part of the distribution process in what is seen by these companies as 'copyright theft'.
When using IRC and I should think newsgroups, while you may possibly be downloading , you are not distributing and not sending out your IP to potentially hostile IP's whose purpose is to identify you and match your IP with a date and file.
As much as I enjoy BB USA and would happily pay for the rights to see it (I already subscribe to Real One) I'm not so sure its worth appearing on radar for. Sort of difficult to enjoy it if my missus loses her connection as a result and concentrates on taking it out on my wedding tackle
Now I will say, that I am not a tekkie, and am probably over cautious - but this is my understanding of the overview and anyone blindly considering BitTorrent and thinks it is the same as downloading any other file needs to more fully understand the process.
