My dog mostly sleeps on his bed but every night when the lights go off he comes into our bed for his night, night cuddle. One of our cats sleeps on my husband's head.

I often wake up to find the cat has snuck under the duvet next to me.

My dogs have the run of the house but I don't let them take the mickey.
They should still do what they're told IF you train them to.

The spaniel is great in winter.
She sneaks into the bedroom, sticks her nose under the bottom of the duvet and then slithers up into the bed and curls up at our feet.
She's like a little, furry, hot-water bottle.
Apparently a lot of spaniels do this.

Owning a pet definitely is a two-way street though.
A pet shouldn't just be an "accessory" or a "toy". They should integrate themselves into the way the house operates and, as such, you will almost always find yourself making compromises for the sake of the pet in some way or another.
I think that's only natural.

I often wake up to find the cat stretched out on the bed, whilst I'm hanging on for dear life at the very edge of the bed!

Lol. I've come home before now and found one of the dogs asleep on the kitchen table (on a pile of clean washing!).

Mine have the run of the house too. One sleeps on my bed, the other on the floor by it. They don't take priority though, they know I'm in charge. They don't take any notice of Mr BB, because he isn't!

They have their own sofa but mastiffs are renowned for being clingy and dont like to sit on their own, she will sit on her own sofa....for about 5 mins then slowly slinks off and slinks onto ours.

Our guests are now used to sharing with our dogs too. Again this is why we have an extra large sofa that will comfortably seat about 5 people. Either that or they sit on the dogs sofa.

One the things I like about having small dogs (I really wanted another biggish dog, but we don't really have room, so got a terrier) is that they can sit on your lap comfortably. On cold nights, they really keep you warm - a great boon when camping.

Hey I hope you didn't take offence at my crazy comment. If I was being serious/malicious then I would have made it clear.

Hmm I'm disappointed this has been moved to the Pets forum. Granted it's a thread about pets but I like the best coverage possible, and that is achieved on the GD section.

Plus I see many political topics on the GD section that remain there, rather than being moved to the Politics section.

No, I moved out because I can't compete for space with two ruddy great dogs on the bed and when all three dogs and my husband are snoring it is impossible to sleep. I did it for me and my sanity actually.

I did take offence, I don't like having my life criticised but I was overreacting a tad. Sorry.

2 cats, Bob is a sweetheart who wouldn't hurt a fly. Well, not really as I've been having to shoo him out with dead mice in his teeth of late

Other one Tickle is a right little cow and demands bedspace, but is so cute, she gets away with anything.

I'm guilty of this. My dad is a little tougher on Winnie...I'm a softie.

Not that I get any thanks for it.

Amber has never liked our sofa but she has always had the run of both places we've lived in. We have an open door policy as she doesn't like to be shut in / out

She sleeps on the bed during the day and at night too - OH usually comes in a bit later and will contort himself into bed as to not wake her (I confess to doing the same if I get up for a drink etc..)

Yep - Amber rules the roost...

Our lives revolve around the dogs tbh. And we have seperate beds so we have enough room for them too. Sofas when we buy them have to be big enough for the dogs and us or yes we would be on the floor.

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem! My cat sleeps at the bottom of the bed on my side and I've lost count of the number of nights he's woken me up as he's kicking my leg to try and move it out of his way!

The other night my hubby woke up in the middle of the night (like he always does) and got up to go to the toilet. He never puts the light on (so we don't disturb the cat who is sleeping ) and when he came back to bed he got a shock as the cat had decided to lie on his pillow whilst he was gone! Cue a scream from my husband when he tried to lay his head on his pilow and found a furry cat there instead!

I Find in the mornings when I get up after having me fizzog stroked by little Lucy (cat) she keeps tapping me (Just like Simons Cat) pmsl.

Then I get up and its *demand* time for food all em having a go cos they want feeding and its that *demanding* look they give you ie staring you out..... I fell exhausted sometimes.

My cat has a daytime bed in the study and a night-time bed in the bedroom. He can go anywhere he wants, but tends to 'be' where I am. The only restriction is going out and I decide when to open the back door, but he can come in via the catflap at will.

I would say that we have a fairly even understanding in that we work around each other's schedule! No, really! (For example: he wakes me up earlier than I'd like, but I won't be badgered into feeding time adjustments.)

My friends would probably say that the cat's in charge though.

Because they enrich your life and are often a damn sight more unconditionally loving than humans.

Humans are also animals. We do not have any intrinsic biological or moral superiority, we just have the developed capability to change our environment in ways in which other animals don't.

Don't visit them, then.
