For those of you with a Desire HD there's a quick and easy way to root it and get super user access.

It's an app on the market and it works with just one click in a matter of seconds. I have it running on my Desire HD at the moment and it works really well.

The best thing is, for those who like me aren't wanting to permanently alter your handset, that it unroots when you reboot your handset - or you can set it to root it on every boot, your choice.

And as I've just discovered, install Titanium Backup Pro and you can now backup all your apps and system data which in the event of a loss of data will be very valuable in getting back up and running quickly.

Another good feature is that Titanium Backup Pro allows you to remove pre-installed apps / bloatware such as the Amazon MP3 store if you no longer want it. Free up resources

and what do you do once you've rooted it, why would you do it?

I can see the overclocking app, but I don't fancy that myself, with android being do open what's the point in rooting other than potentially lowering your security?

I'm not being funny, just wondering as I haven't found much point myself yet.

Well if you've rooted it, you can obviously install a custom rom when someone actually gets round to writing one.

I rooted my (non HD) desire months ago and installed a custom rom on that and haven't regretted it since.

the security issue isn't really even an issue ..

On top of this I have also been able to clear all my cache on the Desire HD which I found was the issue causing the slow downs for me recently (and for a couple of people on other forums too). The cache issue doesn't appear to affect everyone which makes me think it's down to certain apps and how they behave with the DHD, but having the handset rooted meant I had much better control of the cache on the handset and I was able to easily remove a decent amount of unused files which instantly saw a speed increase and since this time no more slow downs so far.

In terms of security it's not the case that everything instantly gets SU rights. If an app wants SU I get prompted and have to reply in 30 seconds. If I don't answer or if I click no then it doesn't get it. It's only if I click yes that it gets SU'd and I can keep a track of who's got what rights with the SU menu option.

Got to agree with these posters - rooting is very usefull. One of the joys of Android is custom roms. Thanks to the guys at MoDaCo it looks like the Orange SF will be getting a FroYo rom soon (it already has an alpha build).

That's interesting to know. I think the SF has an excellent spec for what it is and how much it is. I know i have an unlocked and rooted Desire, but it would be nice to know that if ever I needed the money and needed to sell the Desire, I could step down to the SF.

If you have a branded phone...the only way you can de-brand it is to have root access and a custom rom.
