The history of smoking on BB
Having a bit of a memory failure. I remember the ashtray, the bus stop and the circus corner; I remember the heatening fact that no one on BBCH smoked at all; and of course Nadia's tantrums.
But in the early BB's were they allowed to smoke inside the house? Did anyone before Nadia have a huge problem with not enough tobacco? I think that Aisleyne TOOK up smoking on BB, but has any housemate ever successfully GIVEN up smoking? |

They were allowed to smoke inside the house until the introduction of the new laws on smoking in the workplace......BB8?

I think Sisqo did during celeb BB. It might not have stuck, but he did decide to give up smoking for the sake of his singing voice. Hope he's succeeded. He was actually a nice guy, and my favorite in that series.

Whilst re-watching BB7 a few weeks ago there was a moment when Ash, fag in hand, lit up as she opened the DR door and stepped into the house......and remember Jason BB5, having a moan to BB about HM`s smoking whilst they were all forced by BB to sit in the lounge.....BB basically told him it was his problem and to discuss the matter with the HM`s in question....Oh...how times have changed.

It was a strange decision for him to give up smoking during the show.
Presumably he had the self-control not to take cigs off anyone else. |

Bringing the discussion forward to more modern times CBB4 had a strong smoking or lack of nicotine theme running through it. Who remembers Barrymore picking on Dennis Rodman for putting the cigarettes away in a draw and him saying to him "why have we got to ask your permission for cigarettes."
Also George offered to trade cigars on behalf of the house so other HM's could have cigarettes. This lead to George calling for a "discussion about smoking" round the table. Michael Barrymore asked said to George "who have you given your cigars to George?" and Galloway replied "I would rather not say." Barrymore then responded "You haven't given me one." Aghast by this Galloway said "That is simply not true, I gave a big cigar." Barrymore said "One" (whilst pointing one solitary finger). Galloway said "Yeah, only two minutes ago you were saying I haven't given any. Oh you've remembered that one now have you." That was the start of the decline in the Barrymore and Galloway friendship. |

There was an interesting moral conflict on BB10 when Marcus (who didnt smoke) scarfed up a load of tobacco, intending to distribute it at his pleasure. It was pointed out that housemates who didn't drink simply didn't take any drink, rather than taking their share to barter for favours. Though I don't know whether any non-drinking housemate ever has done this.

There are occasions when non-smoking housemates have taken a consignment of cigs in with them, to use to their own advantage later, eg Maxwell from BB6.

BB11 had its own little ciggies scuffle when they were on rations, with Pepper and Corin going head to head when Corin was Scrooge in charge of the money.
I think Pepper wanted less money/ no money put by for cigs and also objected to the fag breaks Corin took, which left the money unattended. The smokers said they were doing without showers to spend their money on cigs and the dispute came down to whether it was individuals' money or group cash, and the need to maximise how much was left to win the task. He had also been counting Josie's fag breaks. I think the smokers were trying to restrict their intake to four a day or similar, and willpower-lacking Josie was out there puffing away on what might have been her last officially-sanctioned fag of the day by mid-morning. Did another non-smoking HM (JJ1/2 or someone) step in to say they had let Josie use one of their tokens? Can't remember? As an unfortunately addicted smoker who can easily cut down to the minimum rations and manage when circumstances require (work etc), I've always been annoyed with non-smoking HMs who simply demand 'No Fags At All' when the budget is limited. It's not the same as leaving, say, cornflakes off the shopping list. One theme that BB10 and BB11 shared was the "just going out for a last ciggie" sessions, where HMs would go to bed and then every night get up several times to visit the smoking area. |

, so did Marcus with his purloining of the cigs from the party. One of them actually mentioned prison, can't remember who? As a smoker I would have shaken any non-smoking HM upside down to get that tobacco out of them if I'd run out. People like Pepper who whinge on about including tobacco on the shopping list have no idea what its like to be addicted to nicotine. Its better for everyone in there if the smokers have tobacco. |

As an ex smoker I'd say a non smoker would be the best for controling the rationing of the smokes, when you smoke you lie to yourself about how many you've had etc.The raking through the dog ends must be a highlight for some of the ex-housemates

I remember a strange CBB4 viewing experience. I watched the highlights episode that was in the third week where it came to massive argument between Galloway and Preston and then Galloway and Barrymore which was immediately after the 'bankers task.' Whilst the argument was going off I saw Traci smoking at the large table. I remember thinking to myself, "oh i don't remember seeing you smoke before." I obviously did not view enough live feed but it was strange that it was towards the end of the particular series and she was filmed smoking.

![]() I'd be able to cut down anyway because going without proper fags for periods would be preferable to digging through dog ends, and I don't like roll-ups at all. I'd probably get targeted by a desperate smoker cadging all my carefully rationed fags. |

Did the unfortunate incident of Emily using a racist slur whilst having a conversation with Charley occur outside and having a cigarette.

I believe some were smoking lavender this summer.
Edit- last year with bus stop Lisa. Asked by BB if she could have anything she wanted... she said tobacco! Huge pack of rolling baccy, and at times, no rizla or lighter. she missed a trick there!

Was this year's the smokiest BB ever? There seemed to be a couple of really heavy smokers, and hardly any weeks when tobacco seemed to be rationed.

You are right about Aisleyne. She originally took a supply of cigs in to help break the ice with smoking HMs but ended up smoking herself due to nerves and boredom! I remember her Dad and Gran not being too pleased on BBBM!
