It always surprises me how many of the HM's smoke on BB.

Most people I know these days don't, but the majority of HM's seem to be lighting up whenever they get the chance.

Is it BB or my circle of friends and workmates who are the exception to the norm?

I think a lot of people on BB smoke far more than they would outside just because it's something to do and to join in with others. It's also probably something to do with the type of person BB picks - this year had a lot of people smoking and the people in it were all young, mostly outgoing partying people who liked to drink, smoke and have a good time

I know plenty of outgoing people who like to drink and have a good time. I used to be one myself once!

It's just that the majority of people I know don't smoke, especially since pubs and clubs started banning it inside.

I've seen or read (I can't remember which) an interview with Terry Christan who claimed that he and Ulrika shared a few sneaky joints in the toilet. (no cameras in the CBB toilets).

Though I don't know whether any non-drinking housemate ever has done this.”

Didn't something similar occur in BB5? Marco, who was a non-smoker, took in cigarettes as one of his luxury items. It caused an argument with Ahmed who saw it as game-playing.

I'm pretty sure that the hm's themselves decided in the first few years! I can't remember definitively but i think they may have smoked in the house in BB1 but in BB2 they agreed to smoke outside out of respect to non smokers! Like I said don't quote me but i just remember way back then thinking one series, oh that's nice they agreed to smoke outside

But yes like you said it was technically up to the hm's until the smoking laws!

Aaron was a "proper" smoker too! He would go for a ciggy first thing pretty much.

Also they must have had times when tobacco was low cos I'm pretty sure on a few FB vids Aaron was doing the lassic BB thing of collecting unsmoked tobaccos from the ashtrays! At least that's what I thought he was doing at the time.

We just didn't get to see it this year!

One of Tom's nominations said Aaron "because he smokes all the tobacco". So I guess he must have been perceived as smoking quite a lot. I felt a bit sorry for Faye when Jemma was badgering her. I thought she was belatedly going through the 'smoking with the cool kids' stage she would have gone through earlier if she had had a more relaxed upbringing.

Possibly an age thing. A lot of people quit when they are 30 or over as they no longer feel young and immortal!

Fascinating thread.

The smoking ban in all indoor workplaces (which would have included BB house) came into effect 1st July 2007. Where does that tie in with BB series?

It should have come into effect in BB7 if that was the year (2007) that the law into effect. Maybe BB were not informed that the house was classified as a 'workplace' until after the show had finished?

Conceivably they could (and still could) get around it if no-one apart from HMs ever actually enter the House, but was basing above on clear entry into Houses for task set-ups etc. Maybe they just decided to risk it - not like they couldn't afford the fine!

It was BB8 that the smoking indoors was banned from the start even though in law they could smoke inside until 1st July 2007.

Just a couple of my BB smoking memories
I remember Craig in BB1 hiding cigarettes as a prank from Darren and Anna (I think) That was towards the end of the summer

I remember Dirk Benedict from the A Team deliberately smoking his cigars inside despite being asked not to by H from Steps. He was annoyed about something or other, cant remember what now

I loved the arguments about cigarettes in CBB with Galloway, Barrymore, Burns etc Dont forget Maggot going to confront Dennis Rodman and Pete Burns about cigarettes as well. That was funny

He seemed to completely overestimate his status in the house. A bit like that tantrum in the diary room - I think he expected to leave the house to chants of 'power of the people' after that little strop..... he may have had a point about PC gone mad, but that little misogynistic diatribe negated the high moral ground completely.....”

I couldnt stand Marcus either. I thought he was awful and didnt understand why he appeared so popular

Also, I dont care what anyone says. I think what he said to Sree was out of order with the 13, 13's comment.
It wasnt just the voice, it was the head movements, the hand movements and the venom he said it with. Having grown up in the 70's and 80's I recognise nastiness when I see it

Cheers - had forgotten what an all-round class act Maggot was - he put most of his other (older, 'wiser') HMs to shame that series. A great credit to Newport, Wales and Britain. Votes don't kill careers, HMs do...

If I'm not mistaken the only non smokers on this years CBB were Amy Childs and Jedward

That is quite amazing

he did smoke quite a bit but for some reason I assumed he wasn't that serious about it. I think because he often had cigars and that to me makes me think someone who does it for enjoyment and not out of addiction. You are probably right though
