I always find the proportion of smokers really high as I know only a couple of people who smoke now.

I'd take in enough to last me the full series so avoid any confrontation over fags, I couldn't be doing with an idiot telling me I can't have them

I think in BB9 they said they were allowed to take 200 fags in, but that had to last them through the lockdown period as well. Mo said he was so terrified that he smoked almost all his allowance before he came into the house.
In the early series they were allowed to bring booze in. I can't remember if they were allowed to bring spirits.

They weren't allowed spirits or alcopops, just beer wine and cider!

yes, that sounds right. I guess if they had been allowed to bring in anything, people would have brought in over proof spirits and been taken to hospital to have their stomachs pumped on the first night.
in BB11 there were 21 housemates and only 6 of these didnt smoke. i noticed that about 5 of there smokers took up smoking for either something to do or be part of the cool crowd

I think that definitely happens sometimes (as with Faye this year). Presumably not in the later weeks of BB10 when the 'cool crowd' consisted of Freddie, Lisa and David.

Didn't Lisa give up (or at least try to) in BB7?
They seem to put a lot of smokers in as they know that if they get denied their "fix" it'll kick off etc.
They used to smoke all over the house, even the bedroom which did cause some problems with non-smokers who didn't like smoking in the bedroom.

It's not the same as leaving, say, cornflakes off the shopping list.
One theme that BB10 and BB11 shared was the "just going out for a last ciggie" sessions, where HMs would go to bed and then every night get up several times to visit the smoking area.”

I think that was more stirring than genuine smoker hater.
Every single season of Big Brother Australia was smoke free. We had one or two most seasons give up on entry. One housemate slept the entire time she was in the house and in her exit interview was asked why did it seem she slept 18 hours a day she said it was to cope with giving up.

Aden practically inhaled all the cig when he smoked on this series,but I think it may have been him trying to look cool - I also noticed that no-one seemed to run out cigs this year either - I reckon they were all spoiled a bit too much this year.

BB knows that the smoking area tends to be a bitching zone ...
... and that HMs who smoke create "drama" when they're short of tobacco.
We've seen how sickeningly desperate HMs become, even taking other HMs' butts out of the trash and smoking any last tiny remains. *vomit*
Someone who wants to get into BB but doesn't smoke should either (a) pretend they do, or (b) pretend they are so militantly anti-smoking that they'll dash water on people's cigarettes or cut them in the middle with scissors just as the smoker is bringing one to his or her lips.

Where do you get the idea that Faye smoked to be part of the cool crowd?
I thought you were one of the people who were (rightly) sceptical that there even was a 'cool crowd' this year and thought it was a questionable label in other years too.
That sort of mind-reading stereotyping is impossible to refute without brain-scan technology that does not yet exist, but it is also a groundless and poisonous calumny that should be treated with utter contempt.

From a quick google it seems 1 in 6 or so of the UK population still smoke, so I think it must be the type of people you know versus the type of people who go into the house.

What people consider 'cool' is obviously subjective, but it is natural for people to group together with those they think are like minded people, particularly in a show like BB where it helps to have people who like you and will (hopefully) not nominate you!

I was driving my friends 7 year old girl home from school this week and the Bruno mars song came on about a sky full of lighters and she asked me what it means, I told her you know lighters what people who smoke use to light up. Smoke? What's that she wanted to know she had no idea about cigarettes and smoking ( well until I drove her home oops!! Haha) but that really made me feel happy.
Mind you she knew all the words to rhianna's S&M so felt slightly less guilty
