Matt better in a band or solo
I was listening to Matt's band and I wonder if he'd be more successful as a frontman instead of a solo artist?

Agree with Wickedstepmum...
Darwyn are a great band. For Matt fans who are keen on his work with Seven Summers, which is interesting stuff, the good news is that you can now have a listen to Darwyn's first album without committing yourself to buy. When You Wake is on iTunes. Has only just gone up. You might like it. Matt's voice is really prominent and lovely and (to go to the extreme of trivial) if you download it, it saves having to wait till next Saturday to hear his voice again. ![]() ![]() Some really nice reviews there for the album too.

Either band or solo - band leaves him with a nice "fall back" position

Very good thread question.
I have thought he'd be better in a band. That particularly struck me in his second performance when he was singing with his eyes half closed and holding onto a mic stand all the time, singing at the top of his voice. He hit all the right notes, but he looked like a distraught man shouting at a bus stop. Then last weekend the main focus was on his guitar playing, and while not expecting him to be as good as the late Michael Hedges, it made me wonder what it was he was supposed to be showcasing, other than he can strum a few strings, because the average results didn't merit the guitar facing the audience in that way, rather than the singer. Once again there was no real eye contact with the audience, he was allowed to sit 'side saddle' and face the wings throughout. I don't think he has the confidence to be a solo artist, or the musicianship. The only time, for me, that he seems like a really viable solo performer is when he sings falsetto. Everything else about his voice is band-ified |

To me it depends who writes the songs. For someone like Matt, it's all about the songs.
Some performers go solo because they find the songwriting process works better when they're on their own, others front a band because they find working with those other musicians a more productive environment. I've no idea how the songwriting process worked when Matt was with a band - did he write the songs on his own, or was it more of a collective effort with the rest of the band? I think that's what it will come down to as to whether he's better in a band or solo. Or he could just end up with other people writing the songs for him, like other X Factor winners, but I can't really see that being something he'd want to do. |

I guess he will have to trade off his name after the X Factor though but The Matt Cardle Band sounds like a good name for a band to me
![]() I would like them to let him do his own stuff and in particular he should do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch1Kq5QS2kI for Rock Week!! |

Band - nice bloke but not charismatic enough for a solo singer IMO.

![]() ![]() ![]() I think band. He's a friendly guy. Better to have his friends with him to share his success and bounce ideas around.

This is the best Seven Summers track on YT IMO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYGE_f5nwW4 (need to turn it up, the volume is set a bit too low) Personally I think he's a band front-man, don't think he's quite got the charisma to go it alone, plus I think he's better suited to that kind of music which you'd normally associate with a band IMO. |

IMO he definitely suits a band more than being a solo artist. I prefer listening to the guitar rifts; drums and of course the singing of a band so may be a bit biased towards them.
These two are my favourite tracks on the SS album: Live Without It http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CithY...eature=related Without You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Somb...eature=related but I also really like Youngblood, Dirt, Find Me There and Way To Be. All in all a really good album which already has a place on my phone

I think that he'd be happier with a band.
