So Steve Jobs was right after all....Delivers 1-2 punch to RIM CEO
"Can you remember the day when Apple's audacious plan to sell 10 million iPhones in its first year was greeted with extreme skepticism within the cellphone industry. Now the computer company is shipping 14.1 million handsets every three months according to the latest IDC numbers, moving Apple into fourth place on its Top 5 list of mobile phone vendors worldwide. That moves Apple ahead of RIM thus confirming a Steve Jobs boast made during Apple's Q4 earnings calls. Remember that boast? In a Q&A Steve said Apple had passed RIM? Well the next day Jim Balsillie (RIMs Co-CEO) hit back saying: Quote:
And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple's preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM's August-ending quarter doesn't tell the whole story because it doesn't take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple's Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.
Oh dear. Seems there was no reality distortion there - just some serious bitter ranting. ![]() Always fun to see these big business men get flustered over nothing. ![]() Still, I do remember back when the iPhone was announced, it's price, it's features. Most laughed and announced it a failure - more laughed at the 10 million aim. It's not 14 million a month. Crazy stuff. A lot of it is hyperbole from both CEO's. I think market share for RIM and Apple will reach a plateau soon enough, neither of them will grow any more. Luckily Apple has product divergence with its Mac range and iPad. RIM doesn't.
RIM will always be the stalwart of the Enterprise Market, with nokia some way behind. Apple is always going to be the media darling due to the charismatic way it presents its products. Problem for both of them right now is not unit sales (matters to investors yes), but its innovation. Neither have released a product over the last 2 years that can be described as anywhere near innovative. Oh and I have a Blackberry and even I accept its only just catching up. I notice Windows Mobile isn't on that list. I suspect that list will change again come the next quarter. MS has set aside a huge marketing war chest to get people to notice Windows Phone 7. |
