Yeah, Pat Butcher's exit had 9.8m and her funeral averaged 9.1m.

I know they shouldn't be chasing ratings but I think this shows the mistake Eastenders made by having Pats death on new years day. They won't ever get massive ratings then but if they had shown it ins Tuesday in January like Corrie have done then I definitely think they could have matched these ratings.

I agree. A standard Monday in January and Corrie makes 2m more than EE, for a character who has been on the show 6 years, while you have Pat racking up 25 years and goes out on a normal rating episode. No obvious boost. I don't think a 70 minute episode helped EE because it was a little slow in parts and then the funeral being on Friday, arguably the lowest rated episode of the week didn't help matters either. This is just my opinion, but I don't think it's helped that the other storylines surrounding Pat's demise have been less than great, and that does have an effect.

I agree with everything you've said there.

I think Corrie played things right with Becky's exit. They didn't go with a predictable 'affair' deceit, they did something quite original with the Tracey accusing Becky of being involved with the miscarriage, which has been bubbling away for the past few weeks. There's also the sensible decision of having the exit on a Monday night which is the night where the soaps get their highest ratings.

Pat's exit on the other hand was very quick and out of the blue. There's also the fact that the other storylines in EE aren't exactly stellar. Although, the same can be said for Corrie.

I actually think that the soaps have got quite a good set of strong characters, but the storylines are just too weak. Hence exit episodes of certain characters are getting high viewing figures because the public have become more interested in the characters to compensate for mostly dull storylines.

If people are only tuning in if something big is happening then the soaps are doing something wrong. You'd expect fans to watch every episode.

You're always going to get casual fans tuning in for big events

brilliant ratings for Corrie last night

Some interesting facts:

Emmerdale: obtained it's 3rd highest rating of the year(7.94m)

Corrie: first time over 10m since 31st June 2010=10.19m

11.51m =highest rated ep. since 14th February 2010(Leanne & Peter's wedding)

agree with rzt I think that'll be the highest soap overnight/official of the year
but the Big Three have some big stories coming up:
Corrie:
Spoiler
Frank's murder & Betty Williams' funeral(if they can get a few big returns this could attract over 12m)

EastEnders:
Spoiler
Heather's murder

Emmerdale:
Spoiler
have a big stunt/death with a landrover going over a cliff

dullagj2 - didn 't Bill Treacher's last episode get over 12m for Corrie? I thought that was late 2010?

Nothing short of absolutely outstanding for Corrie. Stonking figure and share, so a massive well done to them.

I disagree- I think both ITV soaps are the healthiest they've been for years overall.

A completely unexpected rating!! I never expected Corrie to get that high. Very well deserved - let's hope they can stay around the 10m mark now!

I think you mean Bill Tarmey, sorry my post should have stated 31st June 2011 & 14th Feb. 2011 , I fixed it now and quoted it

Jack dying had 11.64m on 8/8/10, then we had the massive tram crash: 12.37m, 13.74m, 11.83m, 11.98m, 14.03m(live ep.), 11.99m, 12.32m, 11.73m, 11.78m etc....
then Leanne & Peter's wedding part 2 got 11.91m, and now Becky's exit(11.51m)
the last time EE surpassed 11m was xmas day 2010, Stacey's exit(11.4m)

If Emmerdale do a live ep. in October for their 40th anniversary, it could be the top rated soap ep. of the year......

I think that will probably end up as the top rated soap episode of 2012. I can't see what else could beat that unless the Christmas Day EastEnders isn't up against DA.”

We don't know what the soaps have lined up for the rest of the year yet so it's really hard to say

You are missing the point - Corrie has just proved that 11m+ is not impossible these days, so its every bit as possible for EE.
