Cher Lloyd vs Soulja Boy

I need to post about this because some of you are losing the plot over Cher. I've seen contestants bashed in the past but you lot are like a bunch of savage animals. Even Katie Waissel (who imo is more deserving of criticism) has faded into obscurity on these boards.

Anyhoo, if you'd be so kind as to watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Pga4ax5aus

And then tell me why he's a millionaire at the age of 20, and then tell me why Cher Lloyd shouldn't be if that's what she's up against in that genre.

I think anyone with working ears can tell that Soulja Boy's song is ****ing terrible. The same tone of drawl carrying on through the entire song .. literally anyone could do that and It probably sounds like a dog being murdered when he sings it live too. That's what that genre is, and Cher is up there on a level with the established acts in that genre.

Here is Cher's version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmmjRqEwh2I

Like her or hate her, I think anyone would rather listen to her audition than the Soulja Boy original. And no one can say she's any less deserving of success than Soulja Boy.

No, she's not going to belt out 'I Will Always Love You' and she's not going to sing Purple Rain to save her arse in a bottom 2 sing off. But ffs why should she? Why don't you all drop the clichés and embrace the fact that she's different and actually pretty good at the type of music she wants to perform? (I'll admit the rapping makes me cringe, but I don't know to what extent she's in control of what she performs each weekend).

tl;dr: Soulja Boy has made more money at the age of 20 than all of us here will make in our lives and he's embarassingly terrible. Why shouldn't Cher Lloyd enjoy success if that's the sort of competition she'll have in that genre.

Dear OP.

Fundamental flaw in your argument. Cher's "version" is a bloody rip off, down to the jeans of Keri Hilson.....save that Keri is beautiful and can sing..and rap...and dance.

And if you look on youtube, you'll see long before Ms Lloyd was a wobblin' and a warblin' and a ringa effin' dingin' on the X Factor stage in a gangsta stylee., a whole heap of people have been uploading their take on Keri Hilson's version.

she didn't rip it off though... she said "I'm doinbg the keri hilson version" people go on xfactor all the time and sing their audition sng exactly the same as the origional, so why make a big deal over cher...

I feel bad you took time to write all that and no one has commented, but I really have nothing to add.

And on that note, I bid you adieu.

The big difference is that other people don't go on there and do a star in their eyes version of an artist and then get praised to the hilt by those clowns Cowell and Cole for being fresh, original relevant and current. Also when Mary or Matt, or Rebecca or Tracey or Aiden or Wagner, or even boybots did their individual auditions, they didn't dress the same as, try to do the same moves as, same vocal arrangement and style as etc etc the person who's song they were covering, because they were simply doing what all sane contestants do..... a cover version of a particular song.

I agree with some of your points. For example, Soulja Boy's version of that song is bloody awful, Cher is much better.
I have no idea why he's a millionaire at the age of 20. I suppose there must be loads of people who have liitle or no taste in music who actually buy that kind of crap ?
You say "Cher is up there on a level with the established acts in that genre"..yet, by your own admission, you are comparing her with someone who has made loads of money but has very little talent.
There are many talentless people out there in "celebrity land" who have made millions with no discernible talent, but why would Cher (if she is genuinly talented) want to take that route to fortune ? She is not "up there" with the likes of Soulja Boy, she is "down there"..unless all you care about is money in the bank.

This.

Cher didn't just sing the Keri Hilson version, she basically did a poor impression of her, down to the clothes and moves.

Also, OP, I don't agree that Cher is genuine and good at what she does. if you put her up against proper artists in the genre, she will come up badly lacking.

She reminds me of a girl in the end of term school production who is playing the part of the 'tough girl'. She comes across as putting on an act and being unconvincing in the extreme.

First time I ever heard the Soulja Boy version, and my ears are NOT thanking you. Absolutely attrocious.

I dislke Cher immensely, her rapping is cringeworthy and I find her singing voice whiney, not to mention the fact that she has a very bad attitude, BUT she sounds better than Soulja Boy. That said, a cat getting hit with a baby probably sounds better than Soulja Boy.
Fact is, the industry is full of talentless people who got where they are purely for their looks (Think Princess Biffa) or who they know Nothing we can do about it except not buy their music.

Keri's 27 with many years of experience; Cher's 16 and starting her career from scratch. Is there any evidence that Keri was as good as Cher when she was 16?

So? Did any of them have the guts to sing it in front of a large audience and four celebrity judges?

Cher's version.

It still surprises me that the occasional person doesn't quite see the irony.
If you're a rapper, you don't do cover versions of other rappers.
That's just not the way it works. It's just not cricket my son.

Every week it's 'Cher's version'.
It simply just doesn't cut it. It might work if you're a singer doing cover versions, but not if you present yourself as a rapper.

There is no 'Cher's version', you either do your own raps or don't bother.
