Help with Poorly Nokia 221 T Box!

Please can you help me with a problem, which has arisen with my Nokia 221 T box? This evening I tried to update the list of channels on the box, but when it had completed the sequence and I pressed the select button to save the new channels the box just froze. When I tried again, the screen was filled with vertical green stripes.

I have tried unplugging the box from the mains disconnecting the aerial, but the problem recurs. Any advice would be welcomed? Is it worth e-mailing the Nokia help desk?

In my option Nokia never supported this product properly and in the end just "gave up" knowing that their software was defective........and that was over 3 years ago.. . . . And this was a STB that NOKIA marketed at over £120....

Contacting Nokia now would I suspect be a total waste of time.....it was when they claimed to be still supporting the product.

Because of my bad experience with Nokia I have never since bought another Nokia product, nor would I recommend one of their products..... how can you trust them to support it?

The only good thing I found with the 221T was the NAV & OPT function where you could see the Rx signal strength in dBm......handy for aligning an antenna.

O and you could input a PID manually if I recall corrrectly.

Your 221T in my option sounds broken....think you will have to move on. http://www.technisat.co.uk/index3ee5...T_,co,65-15240

Thanks for the advice.

For what its worth, I have e-mailed Nokia though I am not hopeful with a positive response. I managed to dust of an ex-ITV Digital Box (a Sony), which has been installed and is working well!

Did you get any response from Nokia or find a solution? I, too, get the post channel update lockup. (The 221T is still handy with its RF out for a very old TV.)

You could try re-flashing the latest firmware via a serial cable. I have two of these boxes and flashed them both. I regularly turn them off at the mains and this seems to prevent any lock ups during viewing.
As well as two scarts these boxes have RGB and RF out and allow manual tuning via pids. It's worth trying to fix.

see here on how to flash:

Unfortunately, if it's the VTX-D500, your old ITV digital box is unlikely to be compatible with the 8k signals introduced at switchover.

Solution for Nokia 221T freeview not scanning channels

Found your thread earlier this evening when trying to work out if it was "just our 221T" that was playing up.

As our ancient Nokia 221T hadnt refreshed its channels for yonks made the error of doing like you a fresh install scan for everything and ended up with it completing but once pressing OK to store the box wouild just sit their frozen with one green & one red LED and then after a remove/replace mains power would go straight into First Install yet again ad infinitum.

FOUND A SOLUTION!

1. Let the box go through the auto channel detect 0-100% routine but NOTING DOWN the numbers of the half dozen channels that are actually carrying services in your area - eg 40 42 43 45 46 and 67 in our area. (Our box would stick for c15secs as it found a channel with programmes on it, enabling plenty of time to note the channel #.)

2. Do a fresh power cycle and let the box autoscan and complete at least ONE of those channels (eg 40 in our case) and then WHILE the box is still showing TWO green LEDs quickly press the OK button to pause the autoscan and then press OK again to STORE. You will HOPEFULLY then be taken on to the rest of the setup, albeit with only 1 or so of your 6 channels grabbed.

3. Then go into the NAVI and Settings for Channels and do a MANUAL channel scan, moving the number up to each of the other channel numbers - eg 42... 43... etc in our example. That way you progressively build up the c77 TV and c24 radio channels.

Voila you have all your Freeview TV/Radio channels stored.

HOWEVER in our case although nearly all Freeview stations were where we were expecting, at least 012 Yesterday was showing at 310 instead - not ideal, but at least it's there!

The 221T was still playing up very occasionally, but a power off/on would make it work again.

FYI: This is on a box with the latest/last "leaked" firmware that solved 99% of the previous GHASTLY problems the box had when those PATHETIC Nokia people first inflicted such an ill-supported box upon us.

Hope this helps - I had thought we'd bricked ours, but it's got a bit more life in it yet before it meets its destined date with a LARGE SLEDGEHAMMER brought down first on the NOKIA name on it!

MKD

PS OP I did try to email you to be sure you found out about this potential fix, but unfortunately you'd turned off the feature, so hope you do find this before you get YOUR sledgehammer out.

This is a good solution to the crash that occurs when the auto tune finds over 100 channels. I just discovered how to do it myself and was going to post instructions ........but somebody beat me to it!

The Nokia 221T lives on.

Just spotted your reply. Many thanks- I will action tomorrow morning. (Would not be popular at present as the TV is being watched!)

(Also, I had forgotten about contact info when I signed up years ago, so turned that on now.)

That did it. Thank you.

I noticed that the 221T locks up on channel 30 and 31 here. (31 has HD, which I am not bothered about.) Channel 32 had the red LED on to start with, so after selecting the channel, I waited until the LED had gone green before I performed the scan.

Thanks,
Nick

Thanks. The manual retune has solved the problem with my Nokia as well!

Guys - delighted to have helped you above!

I just found this thread again to copy my "how to" to remind my folks how to retune on 30/3 and 13/4 (Sandy Heath TX)

Fingers crossed the Nokia (dreadful brand/support) 221T (good picture) survives the digital switchover...

This Nokia will pretty much always lock up immediately after any scan for channels. Once you have done a scan it is best not change channels etc. Come out of the menu to whatever channel it leaves itself on and then switch the box into standby if it will go. If not, switch off and back on at the mains.

I notice although my box is working perfectly well there is a slightly unusual irritation.

I have deleted all channels and manually scanned each mux resulting in all channels being found.

The trouble is two channels are not stored at their correct channel location, but instead in the 300s channel range.

The channels in question are Yesterday and 4Music.

I have repeated channel installation with the same result each time.

Any explanations would be of assistance.

Thanks

Did you remember to clear all the radio channels as well? Yesterday and 4Music are both on the same MUX (MUX D). There are also a lot of radio stations on this MUX.

Other than that, I can't think why this is happening.

Chris.

Thanks for replying.

Yes I did delete everything including radio stations.

It's rather strange, if after installing all the channels I then delete all the other adult channels and crap also found in the 300 range these three channels appear after channel 301 with the following channel numbers.

302 Yesterday
303 4Music
304 ITV4

It happens on both my Nokia 221Ts

All other channels have the correct channel number.

Try deleting all the channels again. Then search UHF 29 (MUX D) first (the frequency that contains Yesterday, 4Music and ITV4). See if this helps. (Hopefully, you can tune individual UHF channels).

Then tune UHF 25, 22, 32, 28 & 34, deleting the unwanted channels as you go. Make sure you're left with no more than 100 channels in total.

Chris.

Chris's advice first

Otherwise think of them as kurgan2 Channel Numbers instead!

As long as you know where to look for them, that's the main thing.

Thanks again for replies.

Tried this but same problem.

Then I deleted ALL channels in 100 and 300 range including 301

Yesterday, 4Music and ITV4 then all dropped down into the 80s range (being allocated the last 3 highest channel numbers) but still not in their correct position.

As soon as I re-install channel 301, they go back to being 302,303 and 304.

It seems these three channels now want to be placed as the last three highest channel numbers.

Not much of a problem agreed, just a bit weird

Ah well. Maybe DSO stage 2 18/04/12 will get things onto an even keel for you!

My 221T has got through the switchover with aplomb it seems, and is now running happily with an indoor aerial.
