RIght chaps.

I'm looking for a wee bit of advice here, if that's ok?

I've decided to make bottles of flavoured vodka as Christmas presents this year - i'm aiming for 250ml bottles, and have the following flavours in mind...

Parma Violet
Toffee (Werthers Original)
Christmas spice (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg)
Mint (Either Fox's Glacier or XXX Mints)
Lemon and lime (zest)
Vanilla (1 pod, halved)
Chilli (got those little birds eye (?birds eye??) thin ones)

I've actually started - last night I put a whole roll of giant parma violets, into 250ml of vodka in an airtight glass container - I had a sniff this morning and it does actually smell Parma Violet-y, but i've not ventured to tasting it yet (i'll wait til they've all dissolved)

.Has anyone done this before, and can you give me any tips on how i can get the best flavours out of the stuff i'm using? I found a blog called Infusions of Grandeur and that's where I got some of the ideas, but they use whole 70cl bottles rather than miniatures (or smaller quantities, at least).

But yeah, am I wasting my time??

Ahh, no, you're not wasting your time. About 12 years ago we did them in a pub I worked in and they were very popular. Not the classiest drink, but fun.

Sherbert lemon and cough candy twist were great, and your suggestions sound good too. To be honest, I'm not sure we did anything but stick a handful of sweets into a cheap bottle of vodka or tequila and mark it up for a huge price.

With the lemon zest one though, I'd go the whole hog and go for a limoncello. Very little extra effort and a very very nice drink indeed

Pepper vodka is fairly popular around here.

Does anyone know how to make Vodka Skittles? Say I bought the normal sized bottle of Smirnoff (think it's 1.5 litres in size), how many small bags of Skittles would I have to put into the bottle and do I put it in the freezer or something, and how long for?

I made cherry vodka earlier this year.

Just lightly stewed the cherries in sugar syrup, addedto a litre of vodka and left for a month, strained the chrries out, (had them wit vanilla ice cream), capped the vodka and leaving it in the cupboard for Christmas.

I've also done: Sloe Gin, Bramble Brandy, Cherry Brandy and Spiced gingered brandy.

Something very popular in Holland is boerenjongens (ie farmer's boys) which is just raisins steeped in rum.

.
Lild and Aldi do very cheap jars of cherries in syrup - just pour out the syrup, replace with vodka, keep it in a cool dark place for a month et voila.

I no longer use cheap vodka as the results were usually disappointing. It's OK using cheaper gin for the likes of sloe gin but with vodka, the quality of the spirit makes a big difference.

We had a bottle of homemade raspberry voddie given to us as a present. It was presented in a lovely tall slim bottle with three whole raspberries in the bottom and a homemade label. Thought it was a lovely gift.

Good luck !

Try sloe vodka it you can still get sloes in your area.
Stick a couple of big handfulls of sloes, about 150-200g sugar and a bottle of vodka in a kilner jar or similar and leave for at least 3-4 weeks.

Pear Drops make nice flavoured vodka.

I would be a bit more conservative with the amounts you're putting in. Particularly with sweets because they leave a sediment and in a small bottle that might take up a load of room and their wouldn't be enough liquid to mask it.

Have you thought of making it in 70cl bottles then decanting it into smaller ones? That might save you money as well.

We used to do it at the pub

Empty the bottle

Melt sweets in some water

Add to bottle

Add hot water to half way

allow to cool then add vodka.

Top on

Shake

Bang in fridge

That is the Bass way.
