Do you not realise that he is already 'ruined'? Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Amy Whinehouse and Kelly Rowland. He has sung shitty pop music every week. If he wins, the songs he releases will be no different to the bland pop he has been singing on the show.

Kind of agree. There's pop, OK, but then there's this crap. (Having said that, the Britney song was all right in the version that he did.) The song choices have been pretty naff for Matt since the choosing of them has been taken out of his hands. Suspect a lot of the people who see potential in the guy are rooting for him to come second so that he'll have a better chance to develop naturally as an artist.

He's been given shitty songs every week, but he managed to turn them into good covers and retain credibility.

I do wonder what sort of an artist he sees himself as : his fans claim he is a cutting edge indie music singer based on his Seven Summers material, but as you say,he's singing these girly love songs week in,week out on the show

Wh chose them for him? He did not choose them and hisfanbase is increasing not decreasing. People have downloaded his 'real' work and are more than aware of his abilites. He even has people from the US who know what he is singing on XF who are doing the same.

Well he wants to win- he said so at Bootcamp.

I do agree his songs have been chosen by producers to put him in a certain niche and are not his usual style but he seems incredibly happy to be where he is, doing what he is - you just have to look at him bouncing around grinning through the big, cheesy joint numbers. He has a sense of humour and irony I think, he doesnt seem precious or pretentious about his music and he seems ready to try anything.

I tend to believe he'd know whats best for his own career, so I dont feel I want to save him from himself. If he decides he doesn't want to try to win then I suspect we'll know but until then I'll back him to win.

I've not heard that! Cutting edge indie music singer??
He's a good singer. Talented guy, especially as you look further back at his musical career...

Bleeding Love is not a girly song it was not even composed to be sung just by a woman. It was composed to be sung by anyone.

It was co-written by McCartney and Ryan Tedder - Jesse only recorded and released as a bonus track after Leona's version became a success. Prior to that it only existed as the demo they wrote together + McCartney's record company rejected.

Anyway loads of versions out there including by the likes of bands such as the Mystery Jets and the Wombats.

To show the versatility of the song - here's it sung as a beautiful duet:

You never know when Matt reaches the final (and if he doesn't there'll have been some serious vote rigging) they could rejig it as his big duet.

He is loving what he is doing and says so every week in his Diary.

Or perhaps by that point the fad of liking him will have worn off.

If Matt were to win, I can see him doing a bit of a Will Young.

IE He will release a bland pop album as his first release, then do whatever the heck he likes. Will went back to his jazz roots as soon as possible.

Do people like music by fads?
Strange how Handel still sells.
I don't think you do. You hear something, it grabs you, and you give it your attention, unless it becomes crap or changes in a direction you can't follow... (which goes to your original post, tbf)

I do think it will be bad for him to start with, unless he can pull himself out with a credible album, once it's all over. Will Young did it... his 'winners' single was just awlful but he went on to enjoy great success on the back of well written tracks and that he managed to get away from Simon, so there is hope.

Getting away from Simon is the key. It is the paradox that getting involved with Simon is what lauches your career but the saving of it can necessitate getting free. That is what Rhydian has been lucky to have acheived.

I'm referring to all his song choices though, not just Bleeding Love.I'm curious as to why he doesn't sing any material by male artists.....is he afraid of being compared unfavourably perhaps?

As the OP says,if he was to win,he could be forced to release an album full of these girly anthems.

I'd be willing to bet he didn't choose any of them. And isnt Bruno Mars male or do you know something scandalous?

I should have said 'nearly' all Yes,it seems they have decided his niche is singing songs by female artists in a high pitched voice....I presume we can expect more of the same in coming weeks.

Well Rock week should tell us if you're right.

He does the female artist stuff brilliantly anyway - just as he does just about everything I've heard him sing - and alot of that isnt girly or anything! Who'd have guessed?
