It's a competition so you have to follow the rules. If you don't and you pick an easy song, then that's cheating innit.

They are not really themes to speak of. Just something the producers can hang their rather dated catalogue of approved songs in.

I agree that the themes are so broad this year as to be pointless. However, if they ditch them altogether, I'd have to listen to Cher alternately yowling and rapping every single week, while I try to fathom out what she's saying. Her diction is even worse than Diana Vickers'.

I agree, they should let them sing what they want.

The problem with that is that the mentors can't use their small selection of songs that always get chosen.

It makes you wonder if the people who pick the songs actually listen to much music.

Have there been themes this year? If so they must be the loosest since Mr Methane's sphincter.

Keep the themes it weeds out the men from the boys and makes it much more interesting. If they do what they want we will end up with the same old poo week after week.

Cheryl 'what's the point of having a mentor if the acts pick their own songs?'
I think Cheryl is confusing mentor with dictator. She seems to what to grab any credit going for Cher's 'original' melodies. Fair play to Cher for saying on xtra-factor that it is a team that picks the songs. At least she's being honest, if only to undercut Cheryl's suggestion that she is merely her puppet.

There haven't been serious themes because of the large number of contestants, if it was a week for a particular artist there might not be enough songs I guess.. Anyway wasn't the first time they had an artist-specific week last year Week 6? I kind of prefer it this way, the music is more diverse.

The themes this year have been so broad it's a wonder they continue to persist with using them.

I think what gets me about themes is that it is totally irrelevant to someones recording career. Considering all artists record songs that generally suit their voice and style the whole theme thing is a bit redundant, it's just to make the TV show more interesting.

I think the themes are fairly loose, certainly they have been thus far this series. Looking at the songs for tonight a number of them only vaguely tie in with the theme, and thats ok. Having a theme just strings everything together into a more cohesive show.

Having said that, I think a nice touch would be to let the previous week's sing off survivor choose whatever they want to help them avoid the drop the next week.

Hmm i sorta agree. It would be nice to see what songs they want to sing, it would show what kind of artist they are looking to be. But then again the themes are good because it shows that they can sing anything and make it their own.

The themes have been so broad this year, they're practically non-existant. I don't mind them though sometimes, at least it pulls them out of their comfort zone a bit.
