The person who started this thread mentioned how bad the charts are these days, and how bad music is.... Good point... but then he goes on to praise Cher, Uncle Kracker, Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys!

WTF!? Those artists come up with formulaic bland wallpaper 'music' fit only for cheesy commercial radio stations. Boring heard-it-all-before crapola that pleases the tone-deaf.

That's precisely the stuff killing the charts. Bland, boring, predictable, twee rubbish. A bit like the Stereophonics' current output.

All that sterile musak is just as bad as Westlife!
As stated when I started the thread they were just the songs that stood out as being good tunes when listening to the top 40 last week. I have to admit that having heard the Cher song all over the radio like herpes this week, I am well fed up of it now. However the Alicia Keys and Uncle Kracker songs still sound different class to the rest of whats around at the moment. From your recommendations -have only heard the Basement Jaxx which is far from one of their best and Andrew Wk which is ok.
Hopefully we'll see the new Charlatans song - A Man Needs To Be Told in the boring 40 soon because it is well class ,as are the new REM and Ryan Adams songs.
However on the radio has just come the new f*****g Shaggy song which will probably be number 1 for ever more until Robbie takes over again of course -Something stupid indeed!

Yes but I mean when they tally up the sales, stuff bought by the same person counts as only one sale, I am pretty sure of this, it is exactly to stop the kind of dodgy buying 10 copies business.

Don't rule out the possibility I am talking bollocks however, it isn't unknown

I believe www.dotmusic.co.uk tells you some sales info. The top 20 of the year, and the big sellers. But as a rough guide, the number 75 record usually sells about 800 copies I think.

and as much as i dislike a lot of the stuff, long may this trend continue

and as for Less Than Jake being a new band... they've been around for YEARS

its just that popularity in the UK has boomed....

I blame NOFX and Green Day for half this three chord wonder shite thats out like Sum 41.

If you guys are all unimpressed with the official UK charts, there are plenty of alternatives, including The Storm Radio Top 40/100. Just check out my home page.

i look at old charts from the 70's & 80's and i probably like 30 of the top 40 but since the 90's that figure dropped greatly!

Nowadays, i probably like about 4 different top 40 songs per month!

Hell, i can't even remember the last song i liked that got to No.1!

Hey Baby, i think?

Instead of listening to the Top 40 'rigged' songs of the week, try listening to Razor Cuts on Virgin, a great selection of current and retro rock/indie tracks.

I've always said that there comes a time in every man's life when he finds its time to stop listening to Radio 1 and move on to Radio 2, I think it may be your time TV Viewer..

actually on that subject, I seen an advert on BBC1 for Radio2 and I must say they make it seem quite good, mentioning acts like Gomez, Radiohead and Led Zeplin.. I find myself tuning in occasionally.. christ! has my time come at the tender age of 20?!

Personally I have never liked radio 1 - I've always liked heavy rock and indie amongst others and still do even though I am now 39. Most recent cd bought last week was the new Creed cd, also this year I've bought Stain'd, Papa Roach, Dido, Garbage, Blink 182, U2, Placebo, Tool, My Vitriol to name just a few so I don't think I can be called out of touch.
Even when i was 17/18 I didn't listen to Radio 1 (apart from Friday rock show) because it has always been too chart orientated.
I prefer listening to cd's/tapes in car, if I have the radio on its usually Radio 5 or Talk sport, occasionally Virgin radio but I get annoyed when dj's talk over records.
I keep up to date by watching MTV2, Q, Kerrang and the album chart show on VH1.
I remember when just getting to see a band like Iron Maiden on top of the pops made you sit up and watch cause rock and indie never got any tv coverage.

Some of my taste in music is very simaler to yours and you'd be surprised at how well R1 caters for it at times. Lamaque Live (I think its on weekdays about 8pm) is full of the stuff you like, and from my point of view John Peel (just after Lamaque) is great too.. On the most part r1 is rather poor but it has its moments, and I'm sad to say that I believe thats because of the unique way the bbc is funded, by you the general public

But yeh, if you like MTV2 and Q (like myself) you'll like the 2 shows I mention.

It annoys me when people assume you can only like one style of music and not any other. Me for example, the last CDs I bought were by -
Geri Halliwell, Madasun, Uncle Kracker, Dr. Dre, Michael Jackson, Faith Hill, Starsailor, Nerina Pallott, Allstars, Limp Bizkit, Alien Ant Farm ,Train, I Monster, Wheatus, Del Amitri, Blue and Christina Aguilera. Quite a range. Why do people seem to think you can only like Rock if you hate pop, or only like Hip Hop if you hate Rock?

People shouldn't put barriers up when it comes to music. Like what you hear - not what you see. It doesn't matter how the music was put together; it's how it sounds what matters.

True music lovers will tell you the same.

James 2001 and Supernova, thanks. I should've made by point more clear, and RichardS, you were right no one had mentioned that on this thread specifically, but the ideas were behind the comments.

At least it's not as bad as it was when i were a kid when you could get beat up for the type of music ye were into.

Now go and buy some ramones cd's and hear how poppy punk should be played, one, two, three, go!

I remember in the early '80's going to see metal bands in Sheffield and getting ambushed on the way from the bus station by skinheads. Once we informed the police and they said they were aware that skinheads were coming into the city on hired coaches just because there was a heavy metal concert on but they couldnt do anything until they started trouble! One guy pulled a knife on me!
