There is too much unfortunate telly. If the new release gets rid of it all leaving only the good stuff that has to be a bonus.

I wonder if Humax have been made aware of the modded firmware with FTP and Telnet access?

Glad all you brave guys who tried the duff firmware are back up and running

Well at least one person got the following email from Humax re the upgrade :

Unfortunately the software update for this model has been delayed due to technical issues found in testing.
We are also taking this opportunity to see if we can add any further functions to the product.
Although the update is expected soon unfortunate telly we do not have a date for the release.
I apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.

Kind regards,
Michael

We can hope that they intend to add the FTP (or equivalent e.g. Samba) themselves, now that it has been clearly shown that the unit is very capable of this functionality. Leaving people with USB when there is a fully functioning network stack on the HDR is simply taking the Mick.

They may well not as it clearly circumvents the number of copy restrictions imposed by the broadcasters and the freesat+ drm spec. Making it official is not the same as turning a blind eye to it's existence.

If there really is an opportunity to add anything without undue delay:

Please could Humax add timer recording in non-freesat mode and auto switching between modes in both directions.

It really is a key to anyone with interests beyond 28E but who still wants the freesat epg on the same box!

Makes it a little more work - they'd need to tinker with an ftp server to stay within freesat+ spec yes.

As we all well know the copy once allowance here is an utter complete joke, we can copy once and guess what that once is to copy onto a network drive, how is that copy once - I can then copy it another million times with no constraint.

The HD encryption is similarly ludicrous, anyone with a non-freesat recorder or by swicthing to non-freesat mode can freely record without restriction. People would clearly be operating well within the law to hack the firmware some more to disable the part time encryption, if they're using the shared library in /lib that should not be too difficult just to "fix" the library a little.

What stupid rules they've come up with.

Well I just recorded BBC1 HD in non 'freesat mode' and it came up encrypted and wouldn't play or copy..any ideas??

I won't hold my breath, but that really would be the icing on the cake. A small second dish and the Irish FTA stations on the same box. I'll take two more HDR's and bye, bye Sky.
(I better wake up and go to bed, now. These waking dreams can't be good for me.)

You need to switch off then power down the box using the rocker switch at the back after selecting non-freesat mode. When you reboot the HD channels will not be encrypted.

Have they turned on record encryption on BBC1 HD recently? It used only to happen on BBC HD

So has it been delayed again?.

You don't need to use the rocker switch.

You just go into non freesat mode, make sure you are on the channel you want to record, press the green power button on the remote to go into standby mode. Let the blue light turn red (or wait about 15 seconds) then press the green power button again to boot up.

I think you have to do this everytime you go back into Freesat mode and want to record unencrypted again.

It sounds like it has gone back yes, since they're talking of additional functionality. I wonder if that additional functionality is linked to YouView rumours (Daily mail reporting freeview version slipped to end of year, I assume freesat much later still), maybe Humax have some free development time due to the slip and can afford to improve the HDR and give it a longer life in market.

Thanks, I'll give that a try

Tis a pity that as its nearly/over 12 months since the last update as i was looking forward to the record from the buffer but the joe public probably non the wiser that an update was due anyway so the countdown starts again.

Depends on what the extras are, its a solid and reliable box (apart from the power failure causing no further recordings bug) so personally I'm more than happy to wait a few months if it gets us more features ... especially if they offer network connectivity.

Yes record from buffer is the improvement I'm waiting for.

It's so annoying when you miss something but could record it.

I'm thinking of getting one of these so can you explain what recording from buffer means? Is this box as easy to use as a TVonics PVR?
Thanks

From the moment the set top box is turned on it creates a buffer of the lapsed output, ie. it stores video/audio data that can be rewound for the purpose of reviewing should you miss a bit of dialogue or review a tackle in a game of football, etc. The buffer will remain intact until a new channel is selected and from that point onward a new buffer is generated. The maximum length of the buffer is determind by the maufacturer and in the case of the Humax HDR is upto 2 hours long. The next update is said to include recording from said buffer so basically you would be able to retain the content that previously you would have lost by changing channels, and it would create an individual recording in its own right. It is hoped that inventive use of the tuners and timers could effectively upgrade the box to be able to record 3 channels at once in some circumstances.

As for the TVonics PVR... don't know never had one.

Thanks for the explanation for that GC.
I don't think it would worry me not to have it so will order one shortly.

For those with the FTP mod, the "live pause" buffer file is /media/Video/0.ts, which is a fixed length.

Of course it is! (slaps head...) I've been puzzling over that for days...
