Humax are going to replace my foxsat box. Can anyone point me in the right direction for instructions on how to format an external hard drive to the correct format to backup my foxsat? I'm using Windows 7. I have done a search and there are lots of sites or with conflicting information. Thanks in advance.

This may help
http://www.avforums.com/forums/10110491-post2.html Bear in mind that there is no point in transferring HD recordings (they will only play one the hdr that recorded it.). In this case FAT32 will suffice for all but the longest SD recordings. |

I wondered if anyone else had suffered a similar problem. I use the VCR scart feed on a Foxsat HDR to output to an RF converter that then feeds a second TV. On a regular basis it only displays a Black and White picture. They only way to cure it, but only sometimes, is to put thebox into full standby and then switch back on. Sometimes this works on the first or second attempt, but sometimes not at all. The RF converter and cables are fine, as I have eliminated these by process and elimination, using a Scart out on an adjacent DVD player. I have also tried using the video out feeds on the Humax, but these give the same problem.
It's strange as there is no pattern to this problem! Any advice? |

I have seen this problem when trying to use a splitter to feed RGB to 2 tvs from a setop box, it never worked, similar problems encountered.
If it happened, it was because the splitter didn't pass RGB, so you were only getting composite through it. |

A puzzling claim! In fact, the luminance (b&w) signal is created by matrixing the r,g,b, signals, in the first place!

I think Nigel means that there's no "separate" colour signal on RGB that could be stripped to give black and white.
With an S-video output, losing the Chroma signal (or ignoring it because the device is expecting composite) will give black and white. With an RGB output, there are two ways to get black and white: 1) treat it as an S-video source at the input. It's not S-video, hence there's no Chroma signal, so you'll get black and white 2) mix/merge/short the R, G and B signals together, so averaging the three together to remove any differences between R G and B, so giving black and white. Cheers, David. |

This is why the colour control on a TV doesn't work on RGB - it's not required, and there's nothing for it to do (brightness and contrast provide all the adjustment required). Same on a monitor, no colour control. |

As there is no colour on RGB, it's impossible to get B&W from it, unless of course the source is B&W (where all three colours will be identical).
If it happened, it was because the splitter didn't pass RGB, so you were only getting composite through it. 2 tvs, problems occur. Have you tried this? |

Not so, 1 tv (either tv) connected to splitter, perfect RGB picture!
2 tvs, problems occur. Have you tried this? But if the sets are working in RGB there's no way possible that the picture can go B&W, so if that happens the sets are in composite mode. Use a 'real' splitter, rather than a toy one - any video splitter (composite or RGB) needs to be powered. |

No assumptions, please
It's basic physics/electronics. Cheers, David. |

It's not an assumption. Unless you have non-standard video inputs or outputs, a passive splitter can't deliver a standard video signal to two devices at the same time.

Going back to the orginal thread, I am about to arrange replacement of my Foxsat in order to get Colour CVBS and a working Ethernet connection. I have formatted an external HDD to Fat32 - I tried EXT3 but couldn't get anything copied. Anyway, am I right in saying that you can't copy whole folders? Is there an easy way to set everything up to copy e.g. Overnight? Thanks.

You can't copy folders, you can copy the contents of a whole folder or the entire root folder by pressing yellow in file manager to enter edit mode and pressing OK on each file to set a tick before pressing green

Update: humax replaced my box and I now have iPlayer and a colour output on VCR scart and composite. Also, no problem with an external hardrive. Only problem is that Humax have sent 4, yes 4 duff boxes ranging from minor hard drive faults, to the last box completing locking up after a few minutes of watching tv. I'm not a big fan of reconditioned boxes! Going to pick up a fifth one today from courier depot. I ended up getting my old Pace Sky+ box down from loft and was surprised to find I could record and playback even though I don't have a subscription. Maybe the old viewing card helps?!

Monochrome
I know it's a bit late, but I have the same problem when trying to transfer a programme recorded on a Foxsat onto DVD on a Toshiba machine. The solution was simple - a Factory Reset of the Humax and all was well, apart from having to re-programme all the settings.

From page 30 of the manual: You can select the VCR SCART output option. 1. Select VCR SCART. 2. Select CVBS or S-Video using the OK or / button. |
