On Friday, my mother had several persistent calls from a company purporting to be BT. They tried to persuade her to return all her calls to them by offering her, amongst other things, rock bottom line rental. During this process, they also told her that the line rental account, currently with BT, was in the wrong name (it is still in my Father's name, and he sadly died last year) and it needed changing otherwise she could be done for fraud! In order for the name on the account to be changed, they said they needed my Father's death certificate which my mother has dutifully sent them. Why would a company like BT where no money is invested need a death certificate? I have subsequently found out from BT that no death certificate is needed...too late now because this company now has it...along with lots of personal details relating to my Father which they are not entitled to have.

Today she had several more calls from this company. It called itself DTC Direct. It wasn't BT at all. Again she was offered rock bottom line rental and more. Having done some research on this company, I now know that it is sometimes referred to as Direct Telecom Centre.

The serious part is this. During the conversation, my mother gave this company her debit card details, including the three numbers on the back, along with her bank account details and bank sort code. I am extremely concerned about this, Mother knows partly, but I didn't want to alarm her too much at this stage.

Has anyone else experienced this dodgy company?

What have you done about it?

Can anything be done?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you.

Never heard of them, even a google search doesn't give much.

I would report them to OFCOM. It would seem as though she may have signed up for them as she has given her card details.

She does have a cooling off period and should use it.

Looking about, it could be a company called 'Docklands Telecom Centre' also known as DTC Direct. You'll find a few odds and ends if you Google around.
Apparently when cold calling, they say they are from 'DT', which obviously sounds like BT.
The stuff I've found is to do with mobile phones accounts and broadband dongles (with some people suckered into 2 year contracts that they didn't want or need), it's possible that they're trying to sell line rental as well now?
There's a few ex-workers posted that they really had to do 'the hard sell' to meet targets, and that they use dialler lists to call people.

If it is them, and your Mum has given them her card details with the 3 security numbers, it's likely that they've already set-up some kind of contract. I'd recommend that you contact the bank (if it's a debit card) or credit card company and have a chat about it.

*edit - just found this post on a site from August, so they do deal in landlines as well.

I’ve just had a call from these people on my LANDLINE! The boy had such a sloppy way of talking that I couldn’t make out much of what he was saying, but I’m fairly sure he started off by saying “We’re one of the last suppliers of BT landlines.” He repeatedly asked if I was still with BT, but I always answer that kind of question with “Why do you want to know?” and “What are you trying to sell me?” and things like that. He went through some spiel about their monthly rental being half that of BT, and if I’d like to get a pen and paper we could sort things out there and then.

Just want to add to that - you should contact BT and explain things as well, before any sort of migration gets started.

Thanks dude. I did 'phone BT last night to say to them that this company was using their name in vain.

An excellent idea. I also feel like informing the BBC's Watchdog team.

I am just very concerned that they have acquired all her bank and debit card details.

Just had a call from this crew - glad I found this thread.

Do not think I will be accepting their 'wonderful' offer.

Seems to have lots of hidden costs such as £2.50 a month on their landline "1571" answerphone which would soon push prices back above standard BT costs.

Luckily I declined their offer and found this thread

Hope things worked out OK for miles19740.

Good Company, no problems as yet

I have been with these guys for a few months now and havent had any of these problems. They didnt approach me saying they were BT. In fact they even sent me an email before they called me that outlined the deal and who they are. Im not being funny but there arnt many companies that do that.

Im not saying they are perfect but my line rental with them is cheaper than it was with Talk Talk and their broadband has been just as good. I found them to be honest and helpful.

Sometimes I think we just hear what we want to hear, they probably could do with a name change as it is quite confusing but they never claimed to be BT even when I asked them if they were BT.

Who should we listen to:

1. Person who has been with a company for a few months and decided to leave some positive feed back as apposed to the normal..or

2. Person who has nothing better to do than complain about every company possible. Person that does this so much they have posted thousands of times.

I dont mean to be horrible but I know which one makes more sence.

You maybe need to learn how to use the forums properly. I've looked at the first page of all the postings they've made and most of them seem to be related to soaps. So unless they're complaining about how shoddy neighbours has become courtesy of the company that produce it, I feel you may be talking out of your posterior. Until you can PROVE you have no links to the company, other than you're a customer, then you're more than likely to be viewed with suspicion. Even more so when the thread would have been buried way back in the thread list so chances are you'd have had to really search for it.

This is now my third post. I do not work with the company and have no ties to the company what so ever. I apologise that I was not around or even with the company when this thread was first created because I am sure I would have given a clear answer.

It is unfortunate that our country has become so negative that they simply frown upon positive views.

Once again although I have the time to answer this thread I dont think I am going to waste my time looking into each individuals past threads just to prove my point.

Without simply posting a copy of my online phone bill I cant really prove that I am a customer of dtcdirect so I guess you will either have to believe me or not.

Your very first thread resurrects an older one criticising the company and showers them with praise?.

Hmm, you definitely come across as some kind of shill working for them, no doubt trying to counter the bad publicity they have been getting with their dodgy, and actually illegal, sales tactics.

If they were a good company they would not have to resort to dodgy tactics, that alone says enough for me to stay clear and recommend everyone else does too.

HA HA

I shall make this my last post regarding the company and not backing them up but backing myself up.

If you type DTC Direct into google you will see that this thread is near the top. I was simply searching for their number to discuss having an alarm fitted when I came acrossed this thread.

Im pretty intreagued by this site now and may become a regular poster. Maybe highlighting the good points about companies rather than the bad.

If the company were really bothered about this thread im sure they could get it shut down and removed. I may even advise them to do so.

Ah DTC, i in fact worked for these guys when it was Docklands Telecom Centre in 2003/2004 (they changed their name about 4 years ago). At the time i was there they sold only mobile phone contracts, but i have seen that have now started selling other procucts. Our line was 'Hi i;m xxxx calling from Docklands Telecom Centre an authorised partner of Vodafone' (also did orange, 3 and o2 at the time) and then proceeded to sell the customer a mobile phone contract.

Whether they are legit in the fact that they contracted/legal sellers of the companies they claim they are i don't know. No one ever seemed to ask that question when i was there, we just did our job and got on with it, it was pretty good money for a 16/17 year old at the time. They are however, legit in what they sell. If i sold a phone and contract it was with the customer within a few days, that part i can vouch for.

Saying that though, if anyone asked me about using these guys, i would probably tell them to avoid, why go 3rd party?

ichris82, do you seriously think you're going to convine anyone anything other than that you work for this company in some way and are attempting a bit of PR? Give it up, mate. It isn't going to work.

PIB1: Why not simply look at your online bill? All the bills I have online have the contact details clearly placed somewhere on them. Would that not have made more sense. I can smell that smell we get around here when the farmers are muck-spreading...

PIB2: On what basis, exactly? The PPCs have been trying to get the CAG forum shutdown for ages and not succeeded, so I doubt DTC will manage to get DS shutdown over some users broadcasting any personal opinions. Threats rarely work unless you can back them up. I can still smell that smell...

Agreed. What is written on here is hardly bad compared to what else is written about this company on the internet anyway. In fact, this barely touches the sides. DTC has had a bad rep for a long time. Albeit they must be fairly successful in their own way to have been running for so long (though i expect name changes may have had something to do with this!). But a small pokey office in an industrial estate in Harold Hill, will not close this down!

That's actually quite laughable.

Hell, if criticism of a company was not allowed and it was possible to forcibly have DS shutdown I am sure there are many companies who would have tried:

Talk Talk.
BT.
Virgin.
PlanetTalk
Sky
BBC.
ITV.
Channel 4
Lidl
Aldi
Asda
Tesco
The Daily Mail
etc. etc. etc. etc.

Signed up with them 7 months ago, the lady on the phone advised me to buy a timer for my calls.

She said set it to about 58 minutes, then hang up and redial so i never make a chargable call. Those extra two minutes stop me from being a bit rude and hanging up too fast.

Nothing has been wrong with them yet. I was considering taking the broadband out with them as soon as I leave Sky. First time I actually googled the name and I find this, are they illegal or what?

The company itself, no.

However it's their business practices, such as calling and lying by telling customers that they are another company, or acting on that other company's behalf when they are not, that would be illegal.

Their service itself may be OK, but there is no way I would touch any company that had to resort to illegal methods to get customers, no matter how good a service they provided.

So i gave them a ring back yesterday morning and they said they could do my broadband for under £13. I asked have they ever seen this thread on here and the girl said yes they do know all about it. I wanted to know if theyre not dodgy then why dont they get this page removed and i was told its off.com they are regulated by, i thought that was a bit suspect as ive never even heard of an off.com.

I didnt upgrade, thats too cheap to be real and the website they kept qouting sells discount stuff.
