I will never forget, on a night out in the Cathouse in Glasgow, I happened to be wearing a joy division t-shirt. Now, to set the scene, I at the time had a hair cut which probably falls comfortably into the "emo" catergory, a large lad, clad in and ACDC t-shirt turns loudly to his mate and says "****** emo kids, bet he doesn't now who they are". He was obviously oblivious to the fact that I had been a massive Joy Division since about 15 years earlier I heard my dad listening to "Love will tear us apart" when I was just a nipper. You get a lot of that from certain metal fans, just because I straighten my hair doesn't make me a moron

Every "scene" has its idiots though. I dont think metal is any better or worse.”

I know what you mean! I've got a haircut best described as Oasis-esque, and used to do a radio show with this guy who was a full-on metalhead and used to always use it against me! He was actually a great guy though, it was only ever a bit of banter about it all with him, there was never anything sinister in it.

there'll always be heavy metal because there'll always be adolescent boys (of all ages) insecure about their masculinity. And music critics will always ignore it. I can only take it small doses, enjoying the ludicrous camp of it all.

I think that's a very narrow interpretation of metal. Of course many teenagers discover it during adolescence - when you're looking for something to rebel against why not today's dire mainstream music scene after all? - but many more go on to love it through their lives. I'm 21 and know metalheads between the ages of 14 and 64!

Plus, you're also overlooking the vast array of metal out there. Thrash, NWOBHM, symphonic, power, progressive...there's a healthy variety in metal that you don't find in many other genres.

Some bands undoubtedly embrace the "ludicrous camp" of it - Judas Priest come to mind at times (and I think they're fantastic) - but there is a misconception that metal is meaningless. The musicianship is truly outstanding at times, and lyrically some bands deal with the issues the rest are afraid to - Black Sabbath and Megadeth come to mind.

God I wish more people would get into it. These guys are real musicians - they have the real talent!! Not this chart topping rubbish and X Factor bollox!!!

RAR!”

Totally agree - your average metaller is singing, playing an instrument and running round the stage then you get a prat like pete waterman saying one of his acts has to mime as they can't sing and dance at the same time

Again they have tryed that with Stone Gods and the Answers lately.

I've been into metal since I was a teenager in the late 70's and my favorite and most listened to albums are from the 70's/early 80's and quite a few of the bands are still releasing and touring today - thats a longevity that some of todays acts can only dream about.

I hope they release an album soon! Fcking love it!”

Different vocalist and those guys are gonna be the next big thing. Very Dream Theatre-esque musicianship!

haha, I had the same reservation when I first saw the video. It's like Chess Bennington meets Kian from Westlife... And some head banging thrown in. The rest of the band looks authentic but when the lead singer starts head banging, it doesn't gel for me.

And you're also showing a complete lack of knowledge of the genre.I alwaysa find it ttotally predictable that whenever there is a thread about metal there is always someone who replies with something pathetic like this.

If you knew anything at all about metal you would realise that it is meant to be ludicrous and over-the-top. Metal is about having a laugh and enjoying yourself, it isn't meant to be taken seriously.....

Your suggestion that metal only appeals to males is also wildy inaccurate, but then you are coming from a position of almost complete ignorance, as I would say a good 40% of metal audiences are female these days.

Still, you're welcome to live in the warmth of your ignorance.

A lot of people don't understand metal, but for me, it's all about one thing - power. The sheer wall of sound at a metal concert is like nothing else out there, it just invigorates your entire body Ian Gillan of Deep Purple was asked once why rock/metal needed to be so loud, and he responded by asking why classical music needed such huge sections when the same music could be played by half the number of people. It's all about volume and engulfing your body in electric energy ”

I couldn't agree more.

Been to a few gigs over the years for a variety of styles, and the sense of community you get with the other fans is quite wonderful.

I can sit and enjoy virtually any type of music, this morning on the way into work I was chilling to Plan B, then a little 80s rock (Berlin), then some Cradle of Filth (nymphetamine) to wake me up a little.

The sheer energy and sensations you get from cranking the volume up to 11 from something heavier is quite invigorating.
