What do doner kebabs taste like?
I see shops selling doner kebabs, but have never tried one. It looks like they are carving up a large cylinder shaped joint - what animal does that come from?
![]() Anyway, are they a snack or more a meal? What sort of flavour are they? Are they a sort of alternative to fish and chips? I cannot imagine... Cheers! |

I've never had a doner kebab but I've had chicken ones.
The meat is lamb - it has spices added to it. They shave off thin strips and stuff it into a war, pitta bread with salad (usually white cabbage, onion and tomato) and you can add sauces to it (usually chilli, mint and lemon). Try one - you won't know if you don't try. |

They're kind of greasy and leathery and chewy and gristly. Delicious after 8 pints. But really, proper kebabs (ie things on skewers) are a lot better tasting and a lot better for you.

I want to try one but I don't want to get one just to find out that it is some sort of heavy and greasy lump and end up binning it. I may have to just be reckless and try one anyway!
Edit: reading above that sounds exactly what I don't like in food .

I would say that it depends on where you are. The quality can differ greatly.
You can get the cheapo elephant leg type which most takeaways will sell, or you can get the home made ones which are top quality. Here is an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCeUMOgGxFI or you could try this ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKpH6...eature=related |

A place in town used to serve a proper lamb kebab. It was made with a few slices of leg of lamb then a layer of onions and a layer of sliced garlic and repeated till the skewer was full.Nowadays it's all processed crap.

Here is a more authentic version, which unfortunately you probably won't find in many places

Mmm.........donor kebab.........
They're fantastic, food of the Gods I used to love 'em.........but I haven't had one for ages. Perfect combo of bread, meat, salad and chilli sauce........ ![]() I sometimes make my own but with burgers which I cook, slice up, put in pitta bread with raw onion, tomato and cucumber and chilli sauce. |

Find a Lebanese takeaway that does a proper Shawarma - either chicken or lamb that looks a bit like the "elephant leg" but on closer inspection is build up from lots of individual layers usually by hand.
Can't beat it with some tahini and taboulleh |

There's a cracking one on the Holloway Road, yes it's a big road and I've been trying to find it online without success.
Decent meat, I'm not against elephant leg but this was really good stuff. With nice salad, not just a dump of iceberg on a proper flat bread. Wrapped up in a very handy package to eat on the move. I'm going down to London in a few weeks, may try and find it again. |

a doner is like a lamb beefburger i think
try a beefburger sliced up in a pitta bread . similar used to like them, but many years ago my wife got serious food poisoning (although it may have been a pancake roll) and I dont think we have indlged since. You have ot be careful, as they must be a breeding ground |

You'll most like find donar quite greasy and heavily seasoned. Try and go at a busy time else you might find your meat was carved a while previsously. |

Never eaten a doner kebab and never will eat a proper ghastly takeaway as I don't eat lamb . However this revelation that there is a chicken version , well it opens up the possibility of finally trying food from a kebab shop.
![]() All I need to get ready for this is find a kebab shop and drink the required eight pints before staggering down there.

I've seen them being made too - they thread slices of chicken breast onto the central skewer so you know you're getting half decent meat too. |

Around here non of the takeaways bother with a proper chicken kebab. They just have slices of marinated chicken put on to the grill.
You can easily recreate that at home, especially if you have a griddle pan and it is quite healthy. |

There is a fantastic recipe for doner kebabs in here.
Best doner I've ever had was in Stuttgart. It came in a crusty bread roll instead of a pitta and the meat itself wasn't spiced, on the counter there was a bowl of spices with a spoon and you helped yourself. |
