Been trying to play my Itunes songs from music library. but keeep getting " cannot locate file do you want us to locate..." prompt.

My songs are on the laptop hard drive in the ITunes music folder ....so why wont it play or locate them
( where else would they be ?)
Is there a way to override this and play all my songs .( whats the point of Itunes if you cant play them from the itunes library on my laptop ...thats just useless ?????? )

Also cannot play music from my Ipod via laptop !!

ITunes / Ipod and both cannot play music via a laptop...duh ?? whats the point

Can anyone help this baffled muso on how to unlock the secret of the witchcraft that is ITunes ( or nO itunes as is )

This is happening because iTunes is looking in the wrong place for your music. Click iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and check the Music Library location is where it is supposed to be.

There are various ways of solving this, but this is the method I use:-

First check the songs really where you think they are in Windows Explorer/Finder. Should be under Music/iTunes folder. Also check

Then make a backup of your Music folder - just in case. It's important you do this. Copy (not move) them to an external hard drive or even another folder on your computer and make sure they all copy across. Do not continue unless you successfully make a copy of all the music.

Now from within iTunes. If your library is corrupt and you are sure the music files really are present on your computer - but somehow iTunes is not pointing to them. You can erase the library by selecting all the songs and deleting them from within iTunes. It will ask if you want to remove them from the library, say yes - it will then ask if you want to delete the files from your hard drive - SAY NO.

Then you should have an empty iTunes library. Now drag your music folder and drop it onto the iTunes Window. It should then import the music back into iTunes and rebuild the library then all your music should all play. Now re-sync your iPod and it should be resolved.
