Just now on 1 of the music stations, they played the classic Flying Pickets hit "Only You". And it made me thankful for stations playing songs like this, so we don't have to put up with the tripe that gets thrown in our faces in the current Top 40.

Anyone else a fan of this great song ?. Or if there are other great songs from the past which you would like to add to the list.

I was thinking of this kind of thread last night.
I was skipping through the music channels and the Spice Girls were on one. It just made me think, no girl bands are like them anymore. Say what you want about how great GA's songs were to theirs, but SG's songs are just so catchy, and such a breath of fresh air!

i don't.

Music wise, yes, GA have had more hits, IMO.

But Stop, Wannabe, Spice up your Life, it's just a song that the whole world knows. There's such a buzz around them.

I really hope their in the London 2012 opening..

I went to see the UK Subs last night and they were amazing. The lead singer's 66 years old and they've managed to keep it about as real as it's possible to keep it....

I suppose Wannabe could be described as their "signature song" really.

For me personally its not that the singers and the songs that are terrible these days, its the way the songs and music is produced.
Its all done very quickly using computer programmes and programmers with almost zero input from actual musicians, you don't get any feeling from the music its just bland mass produced and clinical and throwaway basically.

Probably a process started by Stock Aitkin and Waterman.

I think i saw Dizzy Rascal on Later with Jools and he had an actual band behind him, why not use that band on your records? it'd make a lot of difference.

I went to see The Specials last year and they sounded like the records live, the crowd was a strange mix but most probably over 40 and still wearing the Harrington Jackets and DM's.

Must admit it was quite a bizzare scene in Brixton, a predominatly black area with 40 year old skinheads in all the pubs going to watch a reggae/ska band.

I like both versions, but marginally prefer the Flying Pickets cover. I've never considered it a novelty hit, but I understand why others would.

It was also said back in 1973 .. and 1963 too. The only difference is that back then it wasn't true, but today it most certainly is!

DEFINATELY started by them three...lol..

well maybe not strictly 'novelty', but they did have a air of "were having a larf" about them...

wasnt it true? depends solely upon your taste...lets see, from 1973,.. part of the union, long haired lover from liverpool, power to all our friends, young love, .. are they not examples of pretty rubbish pop? i know old teddyboys hated glam, especially the glamed up rock n roll revivalists. the prog rock lot had nothing to do with the singles charts as it was beneath them... "you dont follow the charts do you" expressed as a term of contempt.

im 53, and by the end of this year will probably rate 2010 higher for pop then 1973, and certainly 63 (most music from then is very dated and pretty basic). id suggest that there are plenty of great pop groups still making good pop.

As basic, dated and downright naff as some pop acts from 1963 were (Heinz, Billy J. Kramer, Freddie and the Dreamers, Gerry and the Pacemakers etc.) I'd much rather listen to them than the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce, Cheryl Cole and JLS anyday!

billy j was ok! lol.. i wouldnt, because they were of their time. ok ill listen to them as part of a retro fix and enjoy them, but i dont want to assosciate those sounds with my life events of 2010, they belong in my past, my childhood steeped in unspoiled nostalgia. id sooner listen to the wombats, mumford and sons, tim berg, to name but a few who have produced some damn good music recently.
